[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project: Two-colored Lotus Butterfly

For shooting this Reimu Hakurei Cosplay photo set, we chose the evening golden hour when the sun approached the horizon, mainly utilizing intense Backlit photography to accentuate the translucent quality of the red-and-white shrine maiden outfit under the light. Pre-shoot preparations focused heavily on props; coordinating the spell cards and gohei wand with the wind was key to the shoot.

The location was chosen in a dense reed marsh, where a slanted concrete wall in the background formed a diagonal leading line, increasing visual tension. A wide-angle lens was used during shooting, where standing at a side profile better showcased the red ribbons and ruffled white sleeve cuffs. Controlling exposure under backlighting was challenging; metering balanced the blown-out sky against the subject's rim silhouette, using subtle fill light on the face to preserve shadow details. Because the wind was strong, posing required careful control over the fluttering direction of the oversized detached sleeves and red cords.

When holding the spell cards, I specifically adjusted my wrist angle so the cards would catch and reflect a glint of light, enhancing the 3D texture of the props. The first shot was a profile composition tilting the head upward, gazing toward the light source—a posture that elongated neck lines while showcasing the midriff-baring top design. The second was looking back over the shoulder with my back to the lens, primarily presenting the lines along the back of the red-and-white shrine maiden outfit and overall torso contours, with hand motions swaying along the wind.

During the shoot, capturing the flowing motion took repeated trial and coordination between the two of us. This Touhou Project shooting experience gave me a newfound appreciation for Reimu Hakurei's flexibility. The red-and-white outfit stood out vividly against the outdoor setting, while backlighting softly diffused the silhouettes, adding a dreamy, trance-like ambiance. Expressions that felt difficult to capture during practice became effortlessly natural under this light.

Regarding post-processing, we mainly restored the warm golden tones of the golden hour, boosting the softness of the highlights so the sky retained expansive, clean negative space. This nostalgic palette paired with the texture of the reeds prevented the frame from looking flat or generic from over-brightness. We also took care to keep the skirt hem free of grass clippings and debris, as smudges show easily on red-and-white fabric. As a dedicated character photoshoot, the entire process was beautifully realized through the dynamic harmony of light, shadow, and props.
