October 4th is the character's Tenshi Day. This time, I completed an outdoor photoshoot of Touhou Project Tenshi Hinanawi cosplay together with photographer Charles (シャルル). The theme was set as Uchoutenhen; to fit this theme, a lot of thought went into selecting the outfit and location.
Let's talk about the outfit first. This costume is richly layered. The main body is a white long-sleeved dress, with wide flare bell sleeves at the cuffs spliced with lace and ruffles along the edges, giving a wonderful flowing feel when moving. A red bow tie is paired at the chest, and the skirt portion adopts a spliced design: the dark fabric features floral and geometric patterns, which, combined with multi-tiered ruffles, presents a gorgeous yet playful Lolita style overall. The black corset belt and metal buckle embellishments at the waist add a touch of toughness to the attire. For the wig, I selected a highly saturated bright blue, trimming blunt bangs and waist-length hair. On my head, I wore a dark vintage hat decorated with pink orb props and blue flowers on both sides, echoing Tenshi's classic elements.
Regarding props, this time I specially prepared a pink Peach prop with green leaves. Peaches hold special significance in this character's setting, so we made full use of it during the shoot. The outdoor scene was chosen in a wooded area with a wooden railing. I sat on the railing with legs crossed, raising the Peach prop high with one hand and gazing upward. The photographer used a low-angle shot, which not only avoided the cluttered background but also fully showcased the layering of the skirt hem. Maintaining this posture required core strength, but the effect presented actually looks very relaxed.
The lighting was a major highlight of this photo set. The sunlight was very intense that day, so we deliberately looked for backlit angles. Sunlight poured down through gaps in the tree canopy, forming a large white halo at the top of the frame. While shooting against the light can easily cause the face to look dark, the photographer adjusted the camera angle so that the tree shade provided natural diffusion, preserving highlights on the face while granting the overall image a hazy and dreamy ambiance. The ruffles and folds of the dress also appeared exceptionally translucent under the backlight.
Throughout the shoot, we constantly communicated about the details of poses. Tenshi carries an arrogant yet somewhat innocent trait. To express this state, I didn't deliberately smile sweetly while posing; instead, I maintained a natural, slightly languid gaze—such as gazing up at tree leaves or looking down at the peach. Raising my right hand high paired with a slightly lifted chin attempted to convey the character's overbearing yet childishly playful aura.
This shoot lasted around two hours, during which we explored several different camera setups in the woods. The theme of Uchoutenhen is actually quite difficult to fully recreate with real-world scenery, but through the combination of costumes, props, and light and shadow, we strived to build that vast and fantastical atmosphere in three dimensions. Being able to smoothly finish this photo set wouldn't have been possible without the photographer's skilled control and our advance preparation. Shooting on each character day feels like having an in-depth dialogue with the character—growing closer to her through costume and demeanor, a process that is fascinating in itself. Hope this record lets everyone feel the vibe of Uchouten!
