Doing Castorice cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail this time, what stumped me most was the back layering. In the original design, the pair of butterfly wings and layered skirt look fine in 2D illustrations, but bringing them to life means every curve and support point requires repeated adjustments. In particular, for the deep purple wing structure with white spots on the right side, I had to ensure it maintained enough volume when unfolded without being so heavy that the shoulder straps slipped. I tested three support materials of varying stiffness before choosing lightweight thermoplastic sheets for the frame, covered with gradient-printed chiffon. This way, it flows naturally when walking without collapsing.

The wig was also a major undertaking. The long light purple hair has a cool, slightly grayish tone. To recreate that voluminous yet neatly braided effect from the original art, I styled the strands in layers beforehand and secured them into twin-tails with thin matte hair ties. The black thorn crown on top was actually hand-sculpted using resin clay wrapped around fine wire, with every spike sanded around the edges to avoid scratching my scalp. The prosthetic ears were silicone, fixed with skin adhesive. Wearing an elf ear wig setup all day wasn't suffocating at all; I just couldn't help touching them reflexively whenever I looked in the mirror—it felt so surreal.

What required the most heart and soul were the bow and flower accents at the back waist. The large purple bow needed a crisp, 3D shape, so I boned the inner layer and used slightly shimmering satin for the outer layer, giving off fine subtle reflections under studio lights to complement the small white flowers on the skirt. The flowers were individually hand-sewn, each center glued with a small pearl—delicate details that truly stand out up close. The white trailing mesh fabric was extremely long, so to avoid stepping on it, I pinned several hidden snaps inside the skirt hem so it could be lifted for walking at any time.

Lighting on shoot day was soft, with clean white-and-gray indoor curtains providing a sleek backdrop that highlighted the layers of purple theme cosplay tones. Sitting cross-legged on the floor facing entirely away from the camera was actually a pose I designed myself, wanting to reveal the detailed back straps—a crisscross design that might leave the front chest feeling too empty if shot head-on, but fully showcases every design element from behind. The seated position allowed the skirt to spread naturally, with white satin trailing on the left and butterfly wing styling on the right, achieving a balanced composition.

Although I didn't shoot full-face angles this time, I feel the back shot conveys Castorice's serene yet gentle aura even better. As the weather turned chilly and the indoor AC was low, immersing myself in the character while looking at those hand-sewn silk flowers on the skirt made me recall the quote from the original story: \"Even on the cold far shore, flowers bloom.\" That sense of hope amid solitude was precisely the emotion I wanted to capture in this cosplay. From drafting patterns to fittings, it took two full weeks of tweaking—especially the right wing trimming, which was redone three times to achieve a seamless curve. Seeing the final results made all the hard work worth it.

When doing cosplay for characters with complex original designs, you really should pay attention to material contrasts—matte, satin, mesh, and hard plastics combined together to recreate depth. For instance, the white trailing fabric I used this time was a patterned silk that created a visual contrast against the smooth satin bow, preventing everything from blending into a blurry mass. Another tip: since the back exposes a large area of skin, remember to apply body sunscreen and primer beforehand so skin editing doesn't lose texture later. The shoot primarily utilized natural light supplemented by side-back lighting to make hair edges glow subtly, creating a dreamlike vibe.

Every cosplay session feels like a mini stage play: from fabric selection and crafting to makeup, hair, and posing, every step brings you closer to that fictional world. I'm keeping this photo set as a souvenir, as it was both a test of my crafting skills and a tribute to this character. As for next time? I might try a different style, but this memory of purple butterfly wings will surely stay with me for a very long time.
