This shoot was dedicated to portraying Chii. Bringing this entire series to life involved refining numerous subtle details, turning it into a truly time-intensive studio session. Starting with the wardrobe and styling, Chii's visual recognition stems largely from her flowing golden hair and iconic ear-spool headset ornaments. For the wig, I selected a remarkably silky, smooth fiber; the blunt bangs were trimmed with substantial weight, while the twin tails were positioned slightly lower beside the cheeks to flatteringly frame the face shape. The mechanical ear ornaments were crafted from spliced white and pastel pink materials, treated with a soft matte finish on the surface to ensure refined texture before the camera. The gown itself is an off-white lace dress featuring rich, dimensional layering, where the crisscrossing pink lace-up ribbons across the bust and midriff act as the visual centerpiece; before shooting, we spent considerable time adjusting the tension and trajectory of these ribbons to achieve an immaculate silhouette. The lace choker and delicate cross pendant were equally essential—the moment they were put on, the character's ethereal essence immediately clicked into place.
Conveying the appropriate emotional tone proved to be the most demanding aspect of this project. Chii is an inherently pure and innocent soul whose emotional expressions are deeply restrained, meaning she cannot be interpreted through exaggerated gestures or dramatic expressions. To honor this trait, I abandoned wide, dynamic body movements during the shoot, relying instead on nuanced gazes and delicate hand placements to communicate her inner world. In Photo 1, turning in profile while casting my head downward and lightly resting fingertips against the chin acts as a tangible manifestation of confusion and contemplation—the eyes remain unfocused, as if processing an unfamiliar surge of complex emotional data. In Photo 2, placing a finger gently against the lips while looking straight into the lens channels a touch of curious scrutiny—capturing that naive, wide-eyed state Chii exhibits when encountering the world for the first time. In Photo 3, lightly clenching both hands into fists against the chest with a subtle upturn at the corners of the mouth conveys quiet anticipation and innocence. The postures remained intentionally contained, yet it is precisely this gentle restraint that embodies the subtlety of a persocom tasting human emotion for the very first time.
We deliberately chose a white seamless cyclorama studio for this session. A pure white backdrop eliminates all ambient visual distractions, allowing the subject's color palette to take full center stage. The long golden locks, off-white dress, and soft pink accents forged a vibrant, clean chromatic contrast against the white ground. However, shooting against a seamless white cyc rigorously tests lighting design: insufficient illumination leaves the scene looking dingy and gray, while excessively harsh light washes away the delicate relief textures of the dress's lace. To balance both requirements, we deployed expansive softboxes providing uniform frontal and lateral illumination, softening cheek shadows with seamless gradations while preserving the crisp highlights along individual hair fibers. To serve as a practical drawing reference, the compositions incorporated generous negative space, making it easy to extract character contours and structural silhouette lines.
In an all-white cyc, every tiny imperfection is inherently magnified. Every fold across the dress and every stray flyaway along the hair's perimeter demanded meticulous pre-take grooming. For makeup, aligning with classic 2D anime aesthetics meant keeping the foundation dewy and translucent, while the eye makeup remained soft and understated—focusing primarily on distinct, separated lashes and natural aegyo-sal contours without overpowering the character's gentle aura. The entire process was painstaking, from stabilizing headpieces and brushing out the wig to arranging the layered folds of the skirt hem during seated poses, with every detail fine-tuned repeatedly. As a drawing reference, the focal point of this set lies in the crisp, unambiguous demonstration of anatomical proportions and garment architecture. Chii's seated postures drew inspiration from original official illustrations, ensuring the structural lines of the body remained discernible beneath the soft veil of the lace dress. Shot cleanly in-camera without heavy-handed digital retouching, preserving authentic skin texture and original fabric hues, I sincerely hope this collection provides intuitive, practical reference material for those in need.
