The original intention behind shooting this set of Anime cosplay photos was to showcase the lightweight, vivid, and slightly ethereal, cool feeling of this outfit.
The texture of the clothes is truly wonderful. The pure white main color scheme, combined with a large area of lace patchwork and pink ribbon bows, looks visually very soft, without that stiff feeling of piled-up fabric. The wig was also specially chosen to be smooth, light-blonde long straight hair. This kind of matte-textured hair strand presents a very soft glowing effect at the edges when highlighted with side-backlighting, making the whole silhouette look fluffy.
The venue for this shoot was chosen to be a solid-color studio, with large areas of white drapery around and decorations made of white floral art behind, completely emptying out the entire space. This kind of scene highly tests the person's expression of emotion to the camera because the environment itself is very clean without many props to lean on, so it relies solely on body language and eye contact to fill the frame.
The floor was one of the core elements of this shoot, utilizing a whole piece of mirror with a particularly wonderful surface water ripple reflection effect. After sitting down, the layered skirt hem of the outfit and the feet can be seen in the reflection. This visual sense of blending the real and the virtual is actually a product of the collaboration between post-production and set design, presenting an excellent outcome of water reflection photography. In reality, at the moment the shutter released, the photographer stared at the reflector and the angle of the water ripples for a long time before finalizing the angle.
When taking the photos, I chose a sitting posture with legs crossed and knees slightly bent, with my hand half-raised and resting in front of my forehead. This pose not only makes the body lines look slender in the composition, but also naturally uses the intersection of arms and legs to guide the audience's eyes to the whole dress. The barefoot part was actually intentionally designed; because of not wearing shoes, a direct tactile contrast was generated between the person and the cold, reflective platform, giving the picture a greater sense of narrative.
During post-processing, the contrast of the surrounding environment was slightly suppressed, leaving a large area of negative space. The low-saturation cool-toned processing made the pink bows the most eye-catching embellishment in the frame. The transition between highlights and shadows was relatively flat, and the three-dimensional feel of the face was also slowly sculpted by the softbox, rather than a high-contrast light and shadow structure.
Both as the photographer and the model, we unanimously felt that the wonder of this styling lies in its display of the character's unique charm through extreme purity and a tiny pop of color. From putting on the outfit and styling the wig, to coordinating the base and eye makeup, and finally to the finished photos, this process of slowly carving out the details was very interesting. The water ripple reflection combined with the pure white setting forms a relatively perfect visual loop. We hope this set of photos can recreate that quiet and unique Chobits image in everyone's heart.
