Shooting this cyber style photoshoot of Chii required quite a lot of design in terms of set construction and emotional expression.
Regarding the set design, silver tinfoil was used to cover the floor, paired with blue neon light strips to outline the spatial contours. Combined with traffic cones, an old oscilloscope, and a yellow warning sign, these elements formed a strong industrial wasteland texture. The tinfoil on the floor not only refracts ambient light but also reflects the cool blue tones of the background onto the legs, making the image layers much richer.
The difficulty in makeup and styling for Chii lies in the wig and eye makeup. The light golden straight bangs and twintails need to be smooth, with both sides fixed by hair ties with small pink rings, paired with white mechanical-feeling hair accessories to restore the character's hairstyle as much as possible. The eye makeup used a low-saturation pink-purple base color to deepen the eye contour, paired with red contact lenses, giving the gaze a sense of focus while fitting the flawless, ethereal setting of a humanoid computer. The skin treatment was kept as matte and flat as possible to avoid exposing any oily shine under strong lights.
In terms of clothing, although this white bandage suit looks simple, it is actually wrapped very meticulously. The top adopts a diagonal wrapping method, the shorts are pieced together from multiple cloth strips, and independent sleeves for the arms and bandages for the knees are added. Every layer needs to create natural wrinkles and loose edges, thereby creating the fragility of the character as a man-made experimental subject. This kind of fabric easily slips off during movements, so I would frequently adjust the placement and tightness of the straps during the shoot.
During the shoot, I adjusted several different states. For instance, sitting quietly on an old computer mainframe chassis with bare feet suspended; or sitting on a black swivel chair with hands placed on both sides of the body. These movements display a static sense of alienation for the character. The fifth picture of biting the white cloth strip was a state captured in between the main shots, paired with a slight hand-lifting motion to express that playful and vivid nuance between human and machine.
For the lighting, a warm-toned spotlight was used on the right side as the main light source to accurately illuminate the face and torso, making the skin tone look clean and translucent. The environment was diffusely reflected with cool blue soft light, forming a cold and warm contrast with the main light. Special attention needed to be paid to the extremely strong reflection of the tinfoil on the floor; the light intensity had to be carefully lowered or the angle changed during the shoot to avoid severe overexposure in highlight areas causing ugly light spots.
Wearing this refreshing bandage outfit in a wasteland-style room actually brought a huge temperature difference, and my body often felt chilled after a single shot. However, seeing Chii in the final photos sitting quietly or thinking in the messy environment, that subtle sense of alienation belonging to a humanoid computer in the human world was beautifully presented.
As a character cosplay, I always believe that replicating the appearance and creating the atmosphere are equally important. Through this grasp of the environment and emotions, I feel that these atmospheric photos captured the exact feeling I wanted.
