On the night after the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo wrapped up, I headed out to the neighboring streets specifically to shoot this Kindergarten limited look for Takanashi Hoshino. Having cosplayed Hoshino many times before, this kindergarten version feels entirely different—less focused on combat readiness and more on everyday ease. By the time I left the convention hall, dusk had settled and the city lights were flickering on; the interplay of warm and cool illumination provided an ideal backdrop for a relaxed, lifestyle-infused set.
Preparing this ensemble required quite a bit of attention to detail. The baby-blue short-sleeved shirt features a crisp white collar and a relaxed cut, making it very comfortable to wear. To preserve the character's visual balance, the navy pleated skirt was tailored slightly short, which paired well with White stockings and black platform leather shoes to enhance the overall silhouette. The orange cap was a standout piece, requiring multiple angle adjustments to secure its halo ring ornament so it wouldn't wobble during the shoot. For the pink twin-tail wig, I used a curling iron beforehand to give the ends a soft, natural taper. Finer accents like the black choker and the backpack were equally essential—the pink backpack served not only as a charming prop but also held my touch-up kit and phone.
We picked a street with passing vehicle traffic where distant buildings created soft, cinematic bokeh. Supplemental lighting is always the trickiest hurdle in night photography. Without balanced fill light outdoors, the subject either blurs into the dark or ends up with harsh facial shadows. We positioned a continuous soft light slightly to the side to keep facial skin tones clean and bright while retaining the ambient golden warmth of the streetlamps. The photographer directed me through varied poses: the first was a poised stance holding the bag with one hand, keeping a calm, distant gaze; the second had me lifting both sides of the skirt with a playful flair—a personal favorite, as it fanned out the pleats while showcasing the leg lines and White stockings; the third was hands on hips, capturing a proud, tsundere confidence.
Wig care remains a defining factor in convention and street cosplay quality. Because the hair is a vibrant bright pink, streetlights easily cause harsh synthetic shine, so I avoided heavy hairspray to preserve an airy, natural volume. Cleanliness was another challenge—white hosiery picks up grime easily, demanding caution when moving between locations. Since the costume leans toward lighter pastel tones, we prioritized dark architectural facades or storefronts with warm interior lighting so the subject would pop distinctly from the background.
Even after an exhausting day at the convention, pushing through two extra hours of night shooting was thoroughly rewarding. Passing pedestrians glanced over politely, keeping a respectful distance. For any cosplayer, crafting a new look—from sourcing fabrics and custom tailoring to wig styling and the live shoot—involves constant trial and adjustment. This set fulfilled a long-standing desire to portray Hoshino's casual everyday side, and I hope everyone can feel her distinctive charm through these shots.
