Shooting this Huohuo cosplay photoshoot took nearly a month from ordering custom costumes and making props to finally finishing the post-processing. The outdoor location was deliberately chosen in a bamboo forest at midnight, primarily to match the Ancient-style fantasy atmosphere of the dragon shadow and ghost-blue will-o'-the-wisps in the frame. Recreating Huohuo's timid yet forced-calm personality is actually quite a test of expression management. After all, I usually shoot more extroverted and lively characters, so this time I needed to restrain my body movements and let my gaze carry a hint of hesitation and unease.

In terms of costumes and props, this modified Ancient-style waist-cinching design flatters the figure nicely, but the fabric is quite thick, making it feel like a mobile sauna when worn out on a summer night. The triangular command flag in my hand was custom-made; the totem on the flag face and the metal hardware on the edges have a great texture, with the only downside being its weight—holding it with one hand for too long makes my arm ache and tremble. The pair of animal ears on the head and the light cyan large tail behind are the soul of the entire styling, but the tail's volume is truly massive, often getting snagged by bamboo leaves or stones during shooting, requiring extra caution with positioning. The White stockings paired with black chunky-heeled shoes visually elongate the proportions, but the shoes don't fit snugly, so when shooting standing poses, my toes were gripping tightly out of fear of losing my balance and falling over.

A lot of effort also went into the makeup and wig. To highlight the character's traits, the eye makeup heavily emphasized the light green pupils and the blush under the eyes. The wig was trimmed three times to achieve that fluffy, fuzzy volume on top of the head. The photographer racked their brains over the lighting; to keep the character from looking eerie under the blue-green ambient light, soft front lighting was added. For the post-processing special effects, those floating paper-doll talismans and smiling flames were confirmed position, size, and transparency bit by bit with the post-processing artist against reference sketches. As for the setting of Tail Grandpa, every time I finished shooting and saw this massive tail, I couldn't help but silently complain in my mind. Although scouting locations, staying up late, and moving props were all exhausting, seeing this fantastical yet slightly eerie atmosphere in the final photos made all the hassle feel entirely worth it.
