With the cherry blossoms at Chenshan Botanical Garden in full bloom this March, I geared up to complete this Sakura cosplay shoot. Choosing the cherry blossom avenue for this outdoor location was primarily because the sea of pink blossoms harmonized perfectly with the character's overall color palette, effortlessly capturing that warm, spring atmosphere straight out of the anime.
Let's start with the styling. This Cardcaptor Sakura outfit features the classic pink-and-white colorway: a white puff-sleeve shirt trimmed with lace on top, tied with an eye-catching, vibrant red bow at the collar. The pink pinafore dress over it was custom-made with structured fabric, giving the flared skirt a crisp, three-dimensional umbrella silhouette when fanned out. The yellow stripes along the hem and the white lace beneath faithfully recreated the original design details. The small white wings on the back had great structural support, showing no signs of collapsing or losing shape during the shoot.
The wig was an orange-auburn shade, carefully trimmed with blunt bangs and sidelocks. It was styled in a half-updo, tied on the right side with a red ribbon into a fluffy bow. Because the wig had considerable volume, I spent plenty of time texturizing and setting it beforehand to preserve its natural fluffiness and flowing feel.
For makeup, I embraced minimalism—a clean base paired with earth-toned eyeshadow, focusing on defining the eyeliner and aegyo sal to make the eyes appear round, bright, and lively. The lip color had a subtle orange undertone to echo the wig and the red bow on the dress, keeping the overall look harmonious.
In terms of props, the sealing wand topped with white wings and a red gem was the highlight of this shoot. When posing with the wand, I made sure not to grip it too rigidly, keeping a natural bend in the fingers and joints to convey the wand's magical agility across different gestures.
The sunlight was quite strong on the day of the shoot. To avoid harsh midday glare, we scheduled our sessions around 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The photographer took advantage of the natural light filtering through the cherry grove, using a wide-aperture lens to softly blur the background into gentle pink-and-white color washes, making the subject pop. We also experimented with various angles, such as low-angle shots raising the wand and eye-level perspectives reaching forward. The low angle elongated the skirt line, and against the blue sky and blooming branches, created an uplifting upward visual extension.
Some close-up portraits were captured from lower vantage points to incorporate more cherry blossom branches overhead, wrapping the subject in a sea of petals. In quiet poses—closing my eyes or gazing into the distance—I felt that blend of softness and resolve inherent to the character. Although there weren't overly dramatic facial expressions, I hoped to convey the character's natural warmth through relaxed eyes and postures.
Another deep impression from this shoot was how different it felt being under real cherry trees compared to a studio. When a gentle breeze blew, petals naturally fell onto my shoulders and hair—a dynamic ambiance nearly impossible to replicate in post-production. Even with visitors in the botanical garden, the photographer found clever angles and compressed space with a telephoto lens, successfully bypassing the crowds.
Reviewing the photos afterward, the lighting and fabric textures met all expectations. The pink skirt and white tights looked exceptionally soft amidst the petals. Executing a high-saturation cosplay filled with childhood memories and aesthetic charm demands extreme precision in costume details—from collar size to bow shape, any imperfection disrupts visual unity. Fortunately, thorough preparation meant the final shots required almost no heavy retouching.
While elaborate, this outfit did not hinder movement at all, making walking and twirling under the cherry trees effortless.
