I took advantage of the weekend to go to the Shanghai riverside for an outdoor Amiya cosplay photoshoot. Although I can never seem to escape the curse of overcast days, looking at the finished photos, the soft diffused light actually has its own advantages. Usually, everyone loves to chase the intense light and shadow contrast of a bright sunny day, but on a cloudy day, the light acts like a natural softbox, making the skin tone look very even with a natural transition.

As a self-coordinated cosplayer for this Amiya look, I put a lot of thought into everything from the hair accessories and wig styling to the pairing of the shirt and plaid JK skirt. To add a sense of realism, I specially brought along a portable camera and that iconic plush bunny prop, aiming to replicate that casual and relaxed state as much as possible. Although running around during the activity was honestly a bit tiring, seeing the frames frozen in the viewfinder makes all the hard work feel completely worth it every time.

The shooting location was chosen at Shanghai's iconic Riverside Promenade. The guardrails, grass, distant cruise ships, and tall buildings in the background together constructed a scene filled with a modern urban feel. This setting shares a subtle, clever resonance with Arknights' background elements that blend wasteland and technology. Using a large aperture to blur the silhouettes of distant buildings allows attention to be better focused on the overall atmosphere of the character's attire. This time, I also experimented with various camera positions including crouching, sitting, and leaning against the railing; under different postures, the creases of the skirt's plaid pattern and the placement of hair strands all brought out distinct visual effects.

Speaking of interesting anecdotes during the shoot, the wind by the river is always a bit stronger than imagined. While controlling the headband and wig from being blown away, I also had to make an effort to maintain my expression management, which is indeed quite a test of a cosplayer's physical stamina. Moreover, walking in a public area with a full set of gear occasionally drew curious glances from passersby, and some who recognized the character even came up to politely ask for a photo together, which was a unique experience during the outdoor shoot.

My personal aesthetic preference has always leaned toward this clean and translucent color-grading style. Many fellow enthusiasts ask me how to process the colors of photos taken on overcast days. My experience is not to forcefully brighten the sky to create a false illusion of a sunny day, but rather to go along with the grayish-blue sky, slightly adjusting the overall image's contrast and saturation to preserve the authentic texture of the environment itself. This actually allows a higher integration between the character and the scene, avoiding any unnatural feel like a "pasted graphic."

Additionally, the small camera in my hand is actually a great interactive prop; while relieving the nervousness of facing the lens, it adds a touch of narrative flair like "I am recording beautiful moments." Throughout the process, I also used it to take a few photos of the surrounding scenery myself, leaving behind a bit of my own perspective for this shoot. I hope to have the opportunity to try more Amiya looks in other styles in the future, perhaps choosing a day with better weather to capture images with sunlight splashing on my face, which would be another rewarding harvest. Feel free to reach out for a Shanghai photoshoot booking if you enjoy this kind of Cosplay photography capturing a 2D daily life vibe!
