Today's photoshoot was shot down by the coast alongside photographer Yuxiang. Marin Kitagawa is a character I have long yearned to portray—especially her duality as an otaku cosplayer who is simultaneously extroverted, bubbly, and fearless in showcasing herself. For this shoot, we chose her swimwear look. Considering how well it blends into coastal settings, we carefully selected a black halter-neck swimsuit adorned with yellow floral motifs to evoke her trademark seaside vitality. For the hair, I styled a long pink wig, trimming the bangs and sideburns; to ensure it held up against the sea breeze, I used a substantial amount of hairspray. Because gusty winds easily tangle hair, I kept smoothing it between takes. In makeup, I accentuated soft pink eye tones, matching the natural daylight to keep the overall complexion dewy and translucent.

The weather was gorgeous with brilliant, almost piercing sunlight, making poses that shaded my eyes harmonize naturally with the environment. Yuxiang's framing perspective was striking—to capture harmonious compositions blending rolling waves, blue skies, and figure, we explored numerous low-angle and upward-tilted perspectives. The DSLR in my hands was a prop chosen to reflect Marin's love for photography; holding a real body gives far better tactile handling and makes gestures appear effortless. Throughout the session, we continually chased the optimal angle of sunlight across my face while monitoring the strap placement to prevent awkward shadows across the neckline.

Speaking of props, that DSLR had genuine heft. Holding it single-handedly while shading my eyes kept my arm muscles taut, but I gritted my teeth to sustain the poses for the camera. We walked along the coastline searching for clean backdrops free of tourists. When waves surged in, ocean spray washed over my legs and hemline, lending an authentic touch of midsummer realism. While an all-day outdoor shoot is undeniably draining, splashing through the surf and strolling across the sands made the experience wonderfully relaxing, and I am personally thrilled with the resulting frames.

In post-production, alongside standard color grading to render the skies and waters deeper and more luminous, I experimented with using generative AI to create an anime-style AI poster to place beside the practical photos—a fascinating collision between live-action cosplay and 2D art. While AI offers creative sparks in layout and graphic composition, I firmly believe that the lighting textures, organic skin details, and authentic motion in natural breezes captured through genuine photography remain virtually impossible for AI to replicate. The true essence of live-action cosplay lies in a person's heartfelt interpretation and emotional embodiment of the character.

Lately, reach on RED (Xiaohongshu) has felt rather stagnant, with minimal algorithm recommendations, making every upload feel like opening a blind box. There are moments of self-doubt wondering if my aesthetic doesn't match platform algorithms or if audiences favor different visual formats. Yet looking back on that day—working tirelessly under the blazing sun with Yuxiang to align angles, braving the gusts to keep every wig strand in place—the genuine sweat and joy behind the lens are what truly matter. As long as someone enjoys viewing it, or even if it merely serves as a personal memory, this set has fulfilled its purpose. Regardless of metrics, a genuine love for characters and creative passion will never be snuffed out by numbers.
