This set was shot a little while ago at Shanghai Jing'an Joy City. Regarding everyone wondering why Cyrene looks slightly desaturated, I actually made a few adjustments to the wig and makeup to better complement the natural ambient light of the Joy City venue. The pink wig tends to wash out a bit under strong lighting, and to keep the overall tonal palette softer, I avoided high-coverage, heavily pigmented foundation, opting instead for a more natural, translucent base. The bright blue contact lenses were the finishing touch; paired with soft pink eyeshadow and blush, they faithfully brought out the character's ethereal quality before the camera.
A tremendous amount of thought went into the garment details. This deep-blue off-the-shoulder outer jacket has fantastic fabric texture, but to ensure it maintained a crisp, structured silhouette when worn, a thin lining layer was added inside. The jacket's black piped edges, pink-purple sleeve lining, and black straps patterned with golden geometric motifs winding around the arms required meticulous positioning every single time I put it on—especially the metal buckles, which had to be secured so they wouldn't loosen during movement. The blue star-shaped buckle at the waist is an absolute eye-catcher; its metallic sheen paired with the surrounding gold linework created wonderful dimensional layering under the lights. The white inner skirt hem features delicate spiral patterns, and to enhance its dimensional presence, I added subtle structuring along the hemline edges so the patterns remained distinct whether I was walking or turning sideways.
The prop featuring white plush pom-poms was also delightfully charming; its fuzzy, soft texture balanced the cold rigidity of the metallic hardware, lending a much softer feel to the frames. During the shoot, I deliberately used this prop to partially obscure my gaze or serve as a gentle hand rest, aiming to capture that innocent yet sprightly demeanor. The white floral appliqués on the sleeves and the pink bow on the back were equally vital details; to showcase the back profile, we specifically chose the over-the-shoulder look in Photo 5.
Jing'an Joy City is quite spacious with complex mixed light sources, so we sought out relatively quiet corners, using a wide aperture to melt the background into soft blur paired with diffusion scrims to shape the light, striving to cultivate that clean, high-key ambiance typical of studio sessions. What you dread most during on-location shoots is having costume details turn muddy in messy lighting, so we prioritized soft facial fill light to keep the contrast between blue and white crisp and vibrant.
The magic of cosplay photography lies in transforming flat 2D designs into tangible, three-dimensional realities. From selecting fabrics, testing makeup, and styling wigs to conferring with the photographer on composition and angles on set, every step draws you closer to that character in your heart. Although the wind at Joy City that day was a bit strong—occasionally mussing the wig and requiring frequent grooming between takes—seeing the light, shadow, and color harmony in the final photos made all the prep and on-site effort feel entirely worthwhile. This set records my interpretation of Cyrene, and I hope it serves as a wonderful archive of creative cosplay life.
