[Yao Guang cosplay] The Traditional Chinese Style Sweet Girl from Honkai: Star Rail

For this Yao Guang cosplay shoot, the set design and prop selection integrated numerous traditional Eastern elements. The costume featured a classic blue-and-white palette crafted from fabrics with a subtle luster, where the peacock feather patterns along the skirt hemlines refracted multifaceted layers under the lights. The silver accessories across the upper bodice were given a distressed vintage finish to add historical weight, punctuated by crimson tassels and sapphires to deliver compelling visual impact. To capture the character's aloof, cool aura, the wig was styled with feathered hair ornaments, and the sweeping curve of the ponytail was repeatedly refined.

Regarding the set, a wooden daybed, white faux fox-fur throw, bamboo leaves, and hanging calligraphy scrolls formed a classic Chinese courtyard aesthetic. The giant luminous full moon disc in the background served as the crowning touch: we dropped the ambient exposure, washed the background scrolls in warm tones, and keyed the face with cool white light to establish a warm-and-cool contrast that made the subject pop. The handheld folding fan, white wine flagon, and translucent crystal platform heels all reinforced that surreal blend of fantasy and reality.

The entire shoot was an in-depth exploration of light, shadow, and kinetic body language. From our earliest makeup and styling tests, we discussed leveraging the costume's cut to flatter physical proportions. The halter-neck, off-the-shoulder design paired with metallic arm ornaments visually elongated the neckline and shoulders, while the high-slit skirt served as the ideal element to showcase leg curves. To display the fluid drape of the high slit, I explored varied seating angles—leaning slightly to trace the skirt's fall or veiling half my face behind the folding fan. Posing on the hard wooden daybed in clear platform heels required serious core strength, but the resulting lighting and texture made every effort worthwhile.

In close-up portraits, I deliberately reined in facial tension, projecting a relaxed yet cool, distant gaze. The folding fan was my most versatile prop: whether half-masking the face or unfurled, it infused classical poise. Lowering the fan to grasp the white wine vessel shifted the character's aura toward breezy, uninhibited freedom. The blue plush stole added physical volume and softness, contrasting against the rigid timber backdrop. Translucent crystal heels generated bright specular flares under the studio strobes, requiring the photographer to carefully angle the lights to prevent clipping. Balancing classical elegance with 2D aesthetics to bring this Honkai: Star Rail character to life was an unforgettable creative experience.
