[Hoshimi Miyabi Cosplay] A Wonderful Photo Experience Inside a Simulated Self-Service Photo Booth

This shoot attempted to combine the character image with the layout style of a Japanese photo booth (Purikura machine), hoping to present a sense of daily life and fun that is entirely different from conventional studio shoots. To reproduce the core characteristics of the character, I chose the classic long, straight black hair and straight bangs, paired with slightly cool reddish-pink contact lenses, striving to stay as close to the character setting as possible from the very first visual impression.

In terms of clothing, I put on a comfortably textured loose blue-grey striped outfit with long sleeves. This slightly lazy cut is actually perfect for showcasing the character's cool yet playful side. The neckline is paired with a black turn-down collar and thin black shoulder straps, adding a layer of techwear functionality. The tie is dark blue, featuring a striking red and white circular pattern at the bottom, which serves as a visual highlight for the entire upper body. To enhance the overall character attributes, I wore a black choker with a silver cross and starburst pendant around my neck, and a black leather wristband with metal rivets on my wrist. Although these accessories are small in size, their metallic luster and black materials successfully balanced out the casual feel brought by the loose top, making the entire outfit look much more recognizable.

The use of props during the shooting process was also key to getting great photos. I took a cupcake topped with fresh blueberries. During the actual shoot, I used this cupcake to cover one of my eyes. This action seems simple, but it actually requires controlling the angle of my hand; it couldn't block too much of my facial contour, yet it had to ensure that my gaze and the other eye could naturally meet the lens. To capture a satisfying angle, we repeatedly adjusted our positions and hand placement several times. In addition, I prepared a giant white cartoon glove. When wearing it, the proportions of the entire person created a wonderful contrast. This presentation of contrast cuteness truly leveled up the fun of the entire photo set. Although this glove is not very flexible to operate, using its size to break up the static composition when facing the camera actually allowed us to capture some very interactive frames.

The background for the entire shoot was a pure sky blue, a color that beautifully brightens skin tones while offering a fresh and crisp visual experience. In terms of specific presentation, I chose to simulate various output layouts from a self-service photo booth, including ID photos resembling a four-grid style, collages with underlying grid lines, and a layout design mimicking an ID card. This method of integrating real-life modeling into a virtual ID photo frame not only preserved the complete image of the character but also gave these photos a specific narrative scenario, as if leaving behind a proof of character identity randomly inside a street photo booth.

For the makeup, I intentionally enhanced the definition of the eye contours while choosing a matte base makeup to ensure a clear and non-greasy look in front of the lens, so it wouldn't appear oily even under strong light. The red contact lenses were actually the finishing touch of this entire look; against the blue background and cool-toned clothing, that splash of red acted as a wonderful brightener, making me look authoritative without creating too much distance.

This shoot was not only about playing with the character setting but also about attempting an immersive visual expression. Managing facial expressions for the lens and coordinating with props of different sizes during the shoot made me realize that good cosplay work requires not only dedication to costumes, makeup, and props but also the display of the character's inner temperament and tension in front of the camera. Even if it's just a simple chin-resting pose or a moment of holding the plush animal ears, if real emotions can be infused, it will leave a vivid mark in the final photo. This blue and black outfit combined with different layout formats hopes to bring everyone a distinct visual experience. When I first got this outfit, I actually worried whether the loose blue-grey striped outfit might look a bit too casual, but after actually pairing it with the large black turn-down collar, thin straps, tie, and choker, the overall visual focus was pulled right back. This mix-and-match style fits the character setting perfectly, having a bit of casual street style without losing the character's unique recognizability. When selecting this set of negatives, I valued the purity of the background very highly. The clean blue background did not steal the vision from the main subject; instead, it made the color contrast on the clothing look sharper and more premium. The turn-down collar design at the neckline is a very clever detail, preventing the collar area of the long-sleeved shirt from looking empty, while coordinating with the red and white graphics on the tie to enrich the visual layers of the entire upper body.
