Attempting this Frieren cosplay, I was initially a bit unsure because her aura is very unique—that thousand-year-old elf's nonchalance and aloofness are hard to capture. I thought my facial features might not fit well, but after styling was done, it turned out surprisingly suitable. Taking advantage of the nice weather, I specifically chose a waterside and deadwood location for outdoor shooting, wanting to recreate a bit of the Era of Cultivation atmosphere.
First, styling. This silver-white wig really tests layered trimming. To match the character's natural growth feel, the bangs were made lighter, which, combined with blue-gray colored contacts, brightened my eyes. Makeup focused on eyebrows, covered with silver-white shimmer glitter and paste to give flawless base makeup and sharper facial contours. Wearing elf ears was also crucial—I picked ear cuffs matching skin tone with adjustable angles, so side and upward camera angles didn't look stiff, adding signature 3D Elf cosplay depth instead.
For clothing, I picked a simple white sleeveless dress made of light fabric that flows nicely when walking or turning. Bright sunlight that day gave great white reflections, making outfit colors look very pure in frame. Outerwear was a gray knit cardigan, resisting lake breeze chills while fitting her humble, practical travel outfit traits during the Era of Cultivation.
Props included her iconic hand-held staff, a book, and dried flowers on headwear. Red gems and golden shine on the staff contrasted nicely under direct sunlight. For headwear, I wore a flower crown made of white roses and baby's breath atop my head, neutralizing hair's cold tone while adding compassionate, gentle divinity. Holding books during shooting fitted her daily slow-paced rhythm of enjoying magic research in Casual cosplay.
For location composition, I tried various perspectives. Like sitting on old tree branches by the water, using gnarled trunks as natural supports, while brown leather sandals fit outdoor travel wear, displaying leg and skirt lines naturally. Another top-down shot captured lying flat with hands folded across abdomen, looking down from above to see spread hair textures with great perspective depth. Crossing rocks along streams, captured walking moments with skirt fluttering in wind alongside the staff, making dynamic character energy pop out.
Speaking of the "Era of Cultivation" theme, to me it feels like emotional settling. Melancholy and detachment regarding passing time in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are deeply moving. In this quiet natural environment, staring at lake surfaces alone or organizing thoughts by streams carries powerful imagery. Shooting was relaxed without forced, exaggerated expressions—just quietly staying in this environment, letting lenses capture subtle expression shifts naturally, giving finished photos that serene "waiting for time to pass" vibe.
For photography, vintage film color tones were applied. Excellent sunlight meant using side-backlight heavily to outline hair strands and face highlights, making overall frame atmosphere bright yet nostalgic. Film-style photography brings a lifelike feel that isn't overly intense, perfectly matching the tone I wanted to present.
