[Kochiya Sanae Cosplay] Living God of Miracles By the Waterside in Backlight

Completed this Kochiya Sanae shoot during the golden hour before sunset. Sunlight streamed in from obliquely behind, refracting into fine spots of light on the water's surface, perfectly aligning the overall atmosphere with what I had envisioned. The white-and-blue color scheme of the outfit showed its rich texture remarkably well under natural light, while this lighting allowed the layered depth of the white lace and blue skirt to be fully displayed.

This outfit actually has many details that require attention. For example, the sheer tulle design on the cuffs, along with the deep blue piping and gold embellishments decorating the edges—I adjusted their positions many times while wearing it so it would have a flowing feel when walking. The black decorative accessories at the waist and the layered tailoring gave the dress a certain sense of weight while maintaining its lightness. The long-handled prop held in hand was also a core element of this look. Its rectangular top decoration and tied blue-and-white ribbons needed to remain steady when held above the head, which indeed took a lot of physical stamina to capture in its most natural state during the shoot. For hair color, I selected mint light green; the slightly lustrous long straight hair created a golden rim light along the edges under backlight, which was a shot effect I was very satisfied with.

In front of the lens, I tried to convey a gentle yet firmly powerful aura characteristic of the character. The movements avoided overly complex compositions, relying mainly on the character's expression and the visual tension of the costume itself. Choosing a waterside outdoor location was done to create a harmony between the outfit's tones and the natural environment, with the green mountains and clear water in the background highlighting an overall refreshing feel. However, we encountered a few small challenges during the actual shoot—for instance, the light at dusk changed rapidly, requiring us to catch the optimal lighting angles, while water reflections and surrounding reeds occasionally interfered with the frame. Fortunately, the final photos achieved the desired feel.

From anime-style makeup and styling to location scouting and shooting, the production process for these photos was very smooth overall. The sleeves of this outfit felt a bit restrictive when raising my arms, but to better display the arm lines and the prop's state, I chose a more extended grip. In static photography, conveying emotion through the eyes is particularly crucial; the expression when looking straight into the camera needs to feel natural without being artificial, which benefited from the relaxed shooting atmosphere that day. Post-processing mostly preserved the natural shadows and tones of the original shots, with only subtle adjustments made to highlights and shadows without over-retouching, giving the entire set a strong sense of realism.

Although the wind wasn't very strong that day, the humid waterside air combined with holding the prop for an extended period posed a test for completing specific movements. Luckily, the team collaborated with great tacit understanding, finishing key close-ups and full-body shots during the few minutes when the light was softest. The overall outfit felt very comfortable to wear, perhaps because of the skin-friendly texture of the fabric or the added bonus of breathing naturally by the water. This attempt at casual cosplay integrating the character into a natural setting made the entire creative process a joy.
