[Mei cosplay] Honkai Impact 3rd: Happy New Year

When shooting this Japanese style cosplay photo set themed around the New Year, the core focus was on recreating the character essence of Mei from Honkai Impact 3rd. Preparations started with styling the white wig, using hairspray to shape the bangs and ahoge, and securing the red hair accessories. This modified Japanese-style outfit featuring a red, black, and gold color scheme is very demanding on body proportions; once worn, the accessories required continuous adjustment—especially the leg ribbons and wrapping white streamers, which gracefully flatter the leg lines and add depth to the frame. The shoot took place in a traditional washitsu room, where sliding wooden doors and tatami mats naturally established a rich celebratory mood. To match the Happy New Year theme, a red oiled paper umbrella and plum blossom props were prepared to strengthen visual focus. We timed the shoot for the afternoon natural light, allowing sunlight through the windows to form clear, dappled light and shadow across the tatami. Throughout this set, varied compositions were explored: high-angle shots captured the dynamic flow of reclining postures, while side-sitting angles proved ideal for highlighting body silhouettes. Sitting sideways on the tatami with one leg extended forward and the other bent, resting an arm naturally on the floor, effectively elongated the visual leg line while accentuating upper body contours. Holding this pose required constantly engaging my core muscles while projecting the character's signature composure and strength through my gaze. In close-up shots, adopting a knee-hugging pose looking straight into the lens demanded precise expression control, as any hesitation in the eyes would be magnified at close range. Close-ups were equally strict on makeup details—especially the eye makeup, where light reflections made the gaze sharper. Between takes, wig edges were smoothed down to prevent warping. Using a red-and-white tonal foundation not only highlighted the festive New Year atmosphere, but also matched the character's distinct blend of vitality and cool sharpness. Working closely with the photographer, we adjusted body tilt angles continuously to keep body lines smooth. Although holding poses was physically exhausting, the final outcome was deeply satisfying, faithfully capturing the character's unique aura under the warm winter sun and reminding me of the true joy in cosplay. Through meticulous refinement, we delivered a series rich in celebratory spirit and Japanese aesthetic beauty. The red umbrella and folding screens in the background created a visual enclosure that seamlessly embraced the subject. The photos avoided heavy post-processing filters, relying primarily on in-camera light and shadow to maintain a clean, translucent texture. Moving across the tatami and slipping shoes on and off required constant checks to ensure skirts and ties did not loosen, safeguarding the visual perfection of every frame. The entire shoot was an immersive character experience—from the side-profile leg lines to the composed intensity in the close-ups, every effort was made to capture Mei's charm from every angle. The character's gaze and posture paired with this environment created an effortless yet striking festive presence. The entire shoot was completed in a focused, fulfilling flow, and through this hands-on experience, I discovered even more possibilities in shaping character proportions and aura. This work serves as a wonderful New Year keepsake, leaving a clear and captivating impression in both character portrayal and Japanese scene staging.
