Wearing this Elysia Herrscher of Human look for Convention photos on-site really required a lot of patience. Especially those metallic-textured accessories—with slightly larger movements they would shift out of place, so before striking every pose I had to double-check that the gear wasn't crooked. This time I asked Jiemogao-sama to help behind the camera. Since I am usually a photographer myself, standing in front of the lens gave me a bit of an occupational habit—I couldn't help analyzing the lighting and composition from the photographer's perspective. We scouted several cleaner backdrops across the venue. The lighting at conventions is often tricky; the overhead grid structure under ambient light creates harsh contrast between highlights and shadows. This meant the reflector played an indispensable role during the shoot; otherwise, facial shadows and uncontrolled glares on the metallic accessories would have been impossible to tame.

The staff prop in hand looks undeniably ethereal, but the long staff is actually quite heavy. With the added weight of the wings and bells at the tip, holding it up for extended periods demands real core strength. To capture a floating sensation, one set of shots involved lifting one leg. Wearing knee-high boots at the time, my ankles and knees had to work together to stabilize my balance. To keep the skirt and the trailing ribbons from looking flat in the frame, the photographer suggested I make slight turns while holding the prop, using inertia to let the pleated fabric billow out before snapping the shutter rapidly. Out of the four selected final images, some feature dignified standing postures while others capture dynamic movement. My personal favorite is the full-body shot with one leg lifted, as the proportions of the calf lines and negative space along the thigh are just right, keeping the frame from feeling rigid.

Styling the wig also took tremendous care. To keep the color from looking monotonous, the front bangs and sideburns needed dimensional layers, particularly where the hair structure on top transitions into the elf ears. Every time I put on the elf ears, I had to use plenty of adhesive and skin-toned tape to conceal the edges, ensuring they blended seamlessly into my natural facial contours on camera. In fact, shooting others as a photographer and being photographed as a cosplayer feel completely different. In front of the camera, you constantly have to maintain facial expressions while keeping blind spots in mind.

Regarding post-processing, because the venue had an industrial vibe with grey-white ceilings and flooring that didn't quite suit the character's dreamy aesthetic, I desaturated the background significantly while preserving the clean lines of the metallic framework. Then, I independently brightened the character's hair color, the garment's gradients, and the gold-and-blue metallic ornaments. Through this contrast, the character's vibrant colors pop against the background. After the shoot, I sat in front of the monitor editing for hours at home, meticulously tweaking every highlight and reflection. All in all, being able to capture this character's ethereal elegance through the lens made this weekend's convention visit totally worthwhile.
