I had been planning this Shinano cosplay swimsuit look from Azur Lane in my head for quite some time. Compared to her regular naval rigging, this lightweight swimsuit spliced with white lace exudes much more of a casual, lazy summer vibe. We chose an outdoor swimming pool with a distinct Southeast Asian resort flair as our shooting location, where towering palm trees and woven parasols perfectly complemented the relaxed poolside leisure.
The most meticulous parts of the styling were definitely the animal ears and the wig. Silvery-white long hair often creates harsh reflections or looks stiff in regular shoots, but under the diffused natural light of an overcast sky, it produced a very soft, natural glow. To make the wig look fluffy and natural, I alternated between hair wax and spray for styling. Even in the humid poolside environment, it held up well without collapsing, preserving that fluffy and soft visual impression of a Kemonomimi girl. The beast ears atop my head were also handcrafted and reworked with reinforced inner support and detailed faux fur filling, ensuring they didn't look bulky while harmonizing beautifully with the lace details and the white ribbon on my choker.
There was light rain on the day of the shoot, but the cloudy weather created a perfect natural softbox effect. Without harsh direct sunlight, the shimmering pool surface became a visually captivating backdrop. To give the finished photos a cool, translucent quality, I incorporated specific movements in the water, such as gently lifting the hem in the water or sitting in the shallow end as shown in the pictures. The hardest part of this pose was keeping the upper body steady while managing buoyancy in the moving water below. Capturing underwater perspective and reflections required precise timing from the photographer, which resulted in quite a few discarded shots. However, the few successful captures perfectly matched the character's ethereal, hazy allure.
Beyond the character's inherent sweetness, I deliberately accentuated the eye makeup. Crimson contact lenses paired with blended pinkish eyeshadow balanced the cool detachment of the extensive silver hair, while adding lively charm to every backward glance. The gold beaded bracelet and delicate gold choker pendant also added rich accents to break up the predominantly white outfit. I especially want to highlight the lace detailing on the lower part of the swimsuit: once soaked by water, the fabric took on a sheer, airy translucence. Accented with blue bows and a simple transparent half-swim ring prop, the vacation ambiance was instantly elevated.
For outdoor water-based Anime cosplay, reflectors are indispensable. With no direct sunlight, our team utilized large diffusion panels for frontal fill light, ensuring my skin tone retained a healthy, radiant glow under the overcast sky rather than looking washed out. The entire shooting process was immensely enjoyable; although the water was a bit chilly, seeing the character's texture and presence come alive through the lens made every preparation worthwhile.
