Bringing Azur Lane Unicorn Cosplay Convention photos from this CICF Expo, today I'd like to share the behind-the-scenes shooting details with everyone. In the lore, Unicorn is a light aircraft carrier whose character is gentle and reserved, yet reveals an enduring resolve in battle. To capture her casual, everyday mood in an outdoor setting, I put plenty of thought into the styling. The long, wavy light-purple wig required patient maintenance—especially that signature ahoge cowlick on top, which took plenty of wax and setting spray to stay naturally fluffy in the outdoor breeze. For makeup, I selected soft pink-orange eyeshadow and enlarging contact lenses, striving to evoke that innocent, harmless Anime cosplay charm.
The outfit is a pink-and-white casual daily set: an unzipped lightweight long-sleeved pink jacket adorned with yellow star ornaments, worn over a ruched white cropped camisole, with white lace-trimmed bubble shorts on the bottom. An acrylic tag bearing text at the waist became a neat highlight of the look. Considering the street walking involved, I specifically coordinated light-pink slouch socks with white flats—ensuring easy movement while maximizing youthful charm. Although the outfit appears simple, bubble shorts can be unforgiving on body silhouettes; before shooting, I repeatedly adjusted the gathers and waistline placement to keep my figure looking slender on camera.
The weather that day was brilliant and clear, with direct sunlight beating down onto the crosswalk and asphalt. The harsh lighting proved quite the endurance test for facial expressions. We chose a crosswalk backed by lush green trees; this scene, brimming with urban daily life, matched Unicorn's neighborly little-sister persona seamlessly. With heavy pedestrian foot traffic around the convention, we waited a long time to seize brief moments when the crosswalk cleared out completely. At first, I felt fairly nervous posing in the middle of the road in an Anime cosplay outfit as passersby stared curiously. The photographer patiently guided me through finger hearts, salutes, and crouching poses.
The crouching pose was by far the most exhausting: balancing in bubble shorts on one bent knee with one hand on my hip and the other resting beside my forehead. This posture required a stable center of gravity, a straight back, and a relaxed, Cute style expression. To flatter the leg lines, I adjusted my angle multiple times to ensure the legs looked elongated and graceful in frame. The glaring sun made it hard not to squint, but I pushed through to give the lens my best angle. Gusts of wind occasionally tousled the wig, requiring brief pauses for the photographer to help tidy up my hair.
As a cosplayer, every character brings a fresh learning journey. Though Unicorn appears delicate on the outside, in-game she is a stalwart warship capable of standing on her own. During the shoot, I aimed to inject a touch of playfulness and energy into my demeanor—not merely modeling clothes, but bringing the character's spirited side to life. The soft pink-and-white color palette looked exceptionally gentle under the bright sun, and during post-processing, I deliberately preserved this crisp natural daylight without heavy color grading. This street shoot taught me so much about direction in street photography, and I'm deeply grateful to the photographer for their patience under the heat. I'll keep refining my styling and stage presence moving forward, hoping to bring even more beloved characters to life.
