This time I cosplayed Janus from Azur Lane (Janus cosplay), choosing the "Hesitant Changing Time" skin outfit. From receiving the costume to the final shoot, I invested a lot of thought into adjusting the nuances, because although this Sailor style cosplay looks refreshing, the cropped waist and mini-skirt design place demanding requirements on tailoring and body proportions.
Let's start with the wig: I selected a bright blue braided ponytail style. To faithfully recreate the character's signature braid, I combed and restyled the hair strands before shooting to ensure the thickness and layering of the braid looked natural rather than a stiff cylinder. The hat is a white sailor cap accented with a red ribbon and a golden emblem. I adjusted its wearing angle repeatedly—pulling the brim too low blocks vision, while tilting it too high feels top-heavy. Ultimately, I positioned it slightly towards the back to reveal my forehead and bangs, giving a more energetic presence on camera.
In terms of the outfit, the top is a cropped white sailor-collar jacket edged with black trim and tied with a black bow tie. I experimented with tying this bow tie for quite a while to ensure it didn't droop too loosely or choke my neck, while structurally echoing the golden buttons on the jacket. The midriff-baring design is quite a test; since shooting inevitably involves various movements, I did simple warm-ups beforehand to make sure my waist and abdominal lines looked naturally relaxed rather than stiffly tensed. The skirt is a white pleated mini-skirt with twin gold stripes along the hem, resting right at mid-thigh, and paired with white tights (White tights cosplay), the pure color palette truly stood out.
For props, I used the little round yellow chick plushie. Although small, it proved very useful as an interactive prop. In the first photo with a kneeling glance-back pose, I gently pressed my hand against it, providing a natural resting point while adding a narrative touch—as if unexpectedly caught in the middle of changing clothes and glancing back in mild fluster. The second standing pose with both hands holding the hat was designed to showcase the complete silhouette of the outfit and the drape of the skirt, while also accentuating the slender leg lines wrapped in White tights cosplay. Admittedly, this shot reveals my true height, haha—crouching or kneeling makes the upper torso look elongated, whereas standing up shows the true relative proportion of the skirt and waist. Yet I feel this realism is much more grounded, as Anime-style photography shouldn't just be about artificial limb-stretching distortions.
The set design was thoughtfully arranged with abundant white and pale yellow artificial flowers paired with wicker baskets, creating a warm and bright ambiance. This high-key lighting is very forgiving on the white elements of the outfit, preserving fabric textures and fold details without blowing out highlights. During the shoot, I engaged my gaze with the lens as much as possible. Since Janus conveys a sense of sweet innocence paired with clever charm, I avoided forcing an overly cold or overly sugary expression, maintaining natural micro-expressions with occasional drifting gazes to make the photos livelier.
For post-processing, I mainly performed basic skin tone leveling and minor lighting adjustments, avoiding leg stretching or heavy skin blurring, because authentic cosplay quality comes from genuine moments—creases in the garments, slight frizz in the wig, and soft shadows are all part of the photograph. Kneeling and standing among the flowers in this outfit for nearly two hours left my waist and knees a bit sore, but seeing the airy, light-toned results made everything worthwhile. This shoot also gave me valuable insights into Sailor style cosplay—such as avoiding wardrobe mishaps with short skirts through posing and wearing hats without squashing hairstyles. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this Azur Lane Janus cosplay (Janus cosplay), and special thanks to my friend who helped build the scene and press the shutter, allowing me to focus entirely on bringing the character to life.
