For this shoot, I cosplayed Janus from Azur Lane (Janus cosplay), specifically selecting framing angles that highlight the costume details. The top is made of a glossy, reflective black material; the flutter-sleeve off-the-shoulder design, combined with the leather choker and heart-shaped metal pendant around the neck, creates a strong reflective highlight under the lights, offering a cool-and-dark contrast against the silver-white hair (Silver hair cosplay) for rich visual depth.
The wig styling features a silver-white high ponytail. The glossy black bow on top and cascading bangs add casual playfulness, while the fluffy white cat ears (Cat ear cosplay) on both sides are accented with pink inner ears. To match the Halloween cosplay theme, I deliberately added orange pumpkin props in the second photo, giving the scene a distinct festive ritual feel. For makeup, I used striking blue contact lenses paired with winged black eyeliner, reddish-brown shading on the lower eyelids, and an orange-toned matte lip glaze to ensure my complexion wouldn't look overly washed out against the white hair and black outfit.
During the shoot, the greatest challenge came from managing specular reflections off the glossy patent leather; slightly harsh lighting would blow out the highlights and erase the fabric's natural texture. Therefore, we used soft, diffused lighting on set to distribute light spots evenly across the glossy material on my shoulders and arms. The ponytail was subtly curled with a curling iron to give the hair strands airy volume rather than looking stiff. The half-clenched fist pose in the first photo is one of my personal favorites; paired with a lazy, direct gaze, I hoped to project the character's reserved nature infused with a cool, aloof touch before the camera.
While this PVC material has exceptional sheen, its breathability is poor, making it prone to stuffiness and sweat during extended wear. Having a mini fan ready between takes was essential to cool down and maintain good posture for the lens. Regarding character interpretation, Janus typically gives off a gentle impression, whereas my makeup leaned toward cool and playful. For expression management, I slightly tucked my chin and sharpened my focal gaze, finding a poised, glamorous balance where white and black clash harmoniously.
Alongside the pumpkin props, the vintage brown leather sofa behind me added a great textural contrast—its aged texture offset against the pristine glossy outfit, which I intentionally preserved during post-processing. The pure white circle and lock-shaped censors on the chest in the two photos were post-edits added to comply with social media platform guidelines—a slight pity, but a realistic factor often encountered in daily sharing.
The lighting setup was very sophisticated; the photographer used a high-angle strobe combined with an octabox softbox. This lighting created a soft rim light along the edge of the silver-white hair, making the texture of each synthetic strand distinct. Applying individual lash clusters gave the eyes deep, natural definition, with extended eyeliner mimicking feline eyes to echo the plush Cat ear cosplay headpiece.
From initial costume selection and prep to the actual shoot took about a week, with most energy spent perfecting accessory details—such as color consistency of the choker's metal hardware and ensuring no scuffs on the glossy fabric. The photo selection process after the shoot was quite a battle due to numerous specular highlights, requiring careful curation of shots with solid focal sharpness and clean facial shadows. Thankfully, the translucent, crystal-clear effect of the light hitting the silver hair in the final cuts, combined with this all-black ensemble, delivered a deeply satisfying character portrayal.
