[Janus cosplay] Azur Lane Pop-Up Scene: Shooting Insights for this Sailor suit Outfit

On the 27th, I attended the Azur Lane pop-up event in Shanghai, cosplaying as Janus. Arriving fairly late, I unfortunately missed the official little maid Janus, which was a bit of a pity. To make up for it, I drew a cute little Janus pattern on an omurice on-site, serving as a special memento.

Preparing for this cosplay required quite a lot of thought. Because the outfit is made of white sailor suit material, it is rather light and slightly translucent, but wrinkles very easily. Therefore, before heading out, I carefully ironed it and clipped the black striped necktie into shape for a long time so it wouldn't look limp when worn. I also meticulously adjusted small details like the gold buttons at the collar and the necklace. For the wig, I picked a pale blue shade, styling the bangs with hair wax for the right curve and slightly curling the side locks—not only staying true to the character but also visually slimming the face. For makeup, I opted for a clear, dewy base to convey a girl-next-door feel, and specifically chose blue contact lenses to match the overall color scheme and make my eyes sparkle.

Since this outfit features a crop-top design, wearing nipple covers and safety shorts was standard procedure. White garments get dirty easily, so in the crowded pop-up store, I had to carefully navigate to avoid brushing against others' clothes. During the shoot, having a friend snap candid photos felt much more efficient than hiring a dedicated photographer. In photo one, where I sit on a bench holding the giant yellow ball prop, it was surprisingly heavy; I had to constantly adjust my hand placement and shoulder tension to achieve that relaxed, obedient pose.

Photo two is a full-body crouching shot that I chose as the cover. The composition is well-centered, and the crouching posture accentuates the waistline while elongating the leg proportions, which looks very slimming paired with black leather shoes. Photo three was taken with a friend cosplaying a blonde, elf-eared character; the cool and warm color contrast was very pleasing, and we coordinated poses, drawing compliments from many visiting Commanders. Photo four shows me holding the self-drawn Janus omurice—a fun photo-op and a great way to record memories from this offline event.

Lastly, some takeaways: an offline event pop-up differs significantly from formal photoshoot sets. Because indoor lighting is cluttered and often dim, it's crucial to find backgrounds with depth, such as window-side spots or corridors with light fixtures, and use a wide aperture to blur out the busy surroundings. I originally wanted to arrive earlier to see all the official cosplayers, but scheduling didn't work out; nonetheless, it was an enjoyable day. I'm sharing these tips in hopes of helping anyone planning to attend similar themed pop-up events in the future.
