The finished photos from this white studio photography session for Genshin Impact's Varesa Cosplay are finally ready, and a lot of care went into everything from makeup prep to lighting design. Because Genshin Impact characters feature rich color palettes—pink braids, teal highlights, white sheep horns, and that fluffy big pink tail—a complex setting could easily look cluttered. So, we opted for an ultra-minimalist pure white environment, using lighting to emphasize her energetic and lively demeanor.
This time, the photographer used two speedlights pointed directly at the back wall from behind, intentionally overexposing both background and foreground to eliminate redundant shadows and reflections, yielding a completely pure white space. High-key photography heavily tests makeup cleanliness and material texture, as uniform bright light amplifies any tiny flaw. Therefore, we chose a matte foundation paired with soft pink eye shadow and blush to complement the wig's color. To make facial features more three-dimensional, an additional soft fill light was added from the front, catching the eyes' expressions beautifully with clear eye lights so everyone can feel the character's lively energy.
Regarding costume details, recreating this outfit with its strong custom concept style was quite challenging. The neckline features plush fur trim, paired with a beige chunky-knit off-the-shoulder cardigan, with pink and teal pom-poms dotting the hem and cuffs, alongside numerous delicate ribbons and bows. During shooting, adjusting these ornaments' placements was crucial to avoid visual mess against the white background. The white over-the-knee socks featuring pink hearts and teal crosses, paired with thick-soled color-blocked sneakers, looked fantastic across various sitting and kneeling postures, serving as a great pose reference that effectively lengthened leg lines. Furthermore, I tried taking off the shoes to go barefoot, stepping onto a white circular platform, which created a nice contrast with the shod look and brought a touch of natural intimacy.
Looking back at this photo set, I particularly love many of the angles—especially sitting poses with legs stretched out or turning sideways to look back into the camera lens. Because of the enveloping sense of white studio photography, viewers can focus their attention entirely on character movements and outfit textures. The coarse yarn textures, fluffy tail quality, and black top stitching details were all displayed ideally under this lighting.
Of course, this shoot left a few new ideas to explore. As discussed with the photographer, next time we do a Varesa Cosplay session, we plan to incorporate a top spotlight. The current pure white environment is very clean, but adding a spot light source could bring richer light and shadow layering across highlights on the shoulders or top of the head, giving the character a dimensional depth popping from the white background that might better match the magical skill effects from Genshin Impact. Overall, it was a very focused and comfortable studio photography experience; a pure white style is indeed a fantastic choice for expressing vibrantly colored characters, and I look forward to challenging richer lighting combinations next time.
