[Yao Guang Cosplay] Sunlight and Blue-and-White Harmony in Honkai: Star Rail

This shoot took place in an outdoor park bathed in bright sunlight. Here, I'd like to briefly share my experience and thoughts behind this Yao Guang cosplay shoot.

For this look, I feel the key element to master is the hair's sense of layering and its translucency under sunlight. The silver-white wig features light blue gradient tips that display a gorgeous contrast of light and shadow under direct outdoor sunlight. To maintain the hairstyle's shape in the wind, the wig's interior was solidly volumized and teased, while adding texture to the strands so that even without a breeze, it exhibits a natural, flowing effect.

For the eye makeup, bright blue contact lenses with high radiance were paired with blended peach-pink eyeshadow to enhance clarity in the eyes. This Anime-style makeup and styling places extra emphasis on a subtle reddish transition on the lower eyelid, making the gaze appear softer and more natural while complementing the hair color. For lip color, a matte milk-tea shade was chosen to avoid stealing the visual focus from the eye area.

Moving on to the blue-and-white color-blocked costume design. The off-the-shoulder cut demands clean neck and shoulder lines, so when putting on the blue neckpiece, I carefully adjusted its tightness so it sat snugly against the neck without leaving indentation marks. The silver-white metallic choker on the chest, adorned with a large silver ginkgo-leaf pendant and dangling bells below, is the soul of this outfit. Under outdoor natural light, the texture of the silver metal and bells shines exceptionally well, even jingling crisply as I moved, adding a sense of dynamic fun.

We scheduled the shoot for two or three o'clock in the afternoon, when the light carries a gentle warmth that hits the white hair strands and blue tulle with a unique reflective glow. The first photo features a front-facing angle looking directly into the lens, most completely displaying facial features, makeup details, and the chest attire motifs; the second photo captures a winking gesture with one eye closed, adding a touch of playful character to an otherwise aloof style; the third photo showcases waving a hand clad in a dark blue satin glove, echoing the primary blue color palette seamlessly.

At this location, the background comprised lush green lawns and pine groves, along with vintage-style garden streetlamps. Combining these natural surroundings with character styling breaks free from the limitations of studio photography, endowing the cosplay with enhanced vitality and authenticity. Outdoor portrait shoots present their own challenges, especially since long silver-white hair easily tangles or sticks to the face in backlighting, requiring prompt combing and adjustment by an assistant to capture the most natural moments.

Reviewing the RAW shots after finishing, I felt the color scheme of this outfit truly suited the sunny outdoor setting. The cool-toned blue-and-white apparel paired with silver bell accessories against the lush green backdrop carries both the distinct otherworldly distance of Anime aesthetic and a grounded warmth of real-world light and shadow. I have always strived for my cosplay works to move away from rigid posing, aiming for a more relaxed presentation that embraces real-life warmth.

Overall, this Yao Guang cosplay involved thorough preparation across makeup, hair, outfit, props, and location selection. Personally, I feel today's natural-light outdoor presentation achieved a nice balance between the costume's lightness and the weight of metallic accessories.
