[Tingyun Cosplay] Fugue in Honkai: Star Rail, Xianzhou Charm Beneath Dim Lights

I actually hesitated for a long time before shooting this set because the character temperament of Fugue varies across different versions. In the end, we selected a styling concept blending Xianzhou traditional charm with Foxian agility. From the big fluffy tail to the curvature of the Chinese style animal ears atop my head, down to the subtle dark pattern details on the garment, it took extensive adjustments on set to reach the ideal state for photos.

Let me talk about the creative nuances of this styling. The black-and-red palette serves as the primary base tone on the body, paired with fine gold trimming, cloud embroidery, and tassel pendants at the waist—recreating as closely as possible the character's setting of combined mystery and charm. The cream-yellow over-the-knee stockings on my feet received some mottled post-processing to fit the overall design's playful nature. As the visual centerpiece, a tri-color red-black-white folding fan was specially chosen, harmonizing wonderfully with warm-toned lighting. Set dressing mainly utilized bamboo branches, calligraphic cloth drapes, wooden lanterns, and lotus seed cake trays to evoke a traditional Chinese style atmosphere. During shooting, we intentionally placed a pendant in front of the lens to create lens flare effects, adding narrative depth to the frame in Anime-style photography. This massive tail actually occupied quite a bit of space on set, requiring care during posing to avoid blocking key elements.

There were many considerations during prep. For makeup choices, to complement warm yellow ambient light, orange-brown eyeshadow and light green contact lenses were used, hoping to express that vivid yet slightly lazy gaze of a Foxian deity. The hairstyle utilized a high-top updo with streaks of white hair to enhance layering. As for clothing, while the ancient-style wide sleeve design appears ethereal visually, it required constant vigilance against creasing during shooting; special thanks to the photographer on set for patient guidance, capturing every frame perfectly. Post-processing workload for such grand scenes is indeed substantial, especially blending prop edges with tail fur in Anime-style photography. However, the texture of this outfit under specific lighting is truly marvelous, particularly how geometric patterns on the fan surface echo the background calligraphy—making the photo more than character recreation, but a complete Eastern scroll painting. Every time I browse the final shots, I recall the glow of lantern candlelight and the serenity of breeze blowing through bamboo leaves during the shoot.

For post-processing, I leaned toward preserving translucent gloss without excessively raising saturation, instead strengthening shadow details to give dark fabrics texture rather than pitch blackness. Hanging pendants and thin gauze interlaced with each other, creating a subtle spatial hierarchy. Compared to purely bright tones, this dim warm yellow light creates a far better mysterious ambiance for a Foxian maiden beneath dim lamps. For myself, works with strong character lore demand subtracting from filters and color tones to retain original textures, making the image more enduring to look at. When the gaffer struck the side-backlight, it gave the edges of the tail fur a beautiful rim light, which was a part of the shoot I was extremely pleased with.

Although prop prep was heavy, the resulting effects were well worth it. Bamboo-woven lanterns, scrolls, and tea sets in the scene lend a quiet, domestic feel to the frame. I hope this work showcases not only the character's appearance, but also conveys a measure of her quiet, composed inner qualities. These frozen moments unique to the character are precisely where the charm of cosplay lies. Before shooting, I deliberately read through extensive background lore text to incorporate more emotional nuances from the original setting into subtle gazes and body gestures in Tingyun cosplay / Fugue Cosplay. Observing carefully, one notices that my hand gestures holding the fan and pendant intentionally mimic specific compositional frames. Communicating these details repeatedly with my partner until final completion was a process I treasure immensely. To me, shooting is not merely restoring an outer look, but connecting with the soul of this classic character, making every shutter press meaningful.
