[Yidhari Cosplay] Shadow Hunter of Zenless Zone Zero: Intertwining Night Light and Tentacles

Choosing Yidhari from Zenless Zone Zero for this photoshoot at the Dongguan Firefly Anime Game Carnival was a thrilled decision. Once the event photo delivery came through, the overall texture delivered an ideal performance under the unique convention hall lighting. Prior to shooting, the photographer and I communicated extensively about the location and lighting strategy. Considering the venue lighting setup and prop materials, we decided to maximize natural light paired with artificial fill lighting to highlight overall textures.

The costume design itself emphasizes clean, sleek tailoring, featuring a white deep V-neck bodysuit paired with black high-waisted bottoms to build a striking visual contrast between light and shadow. The detachable arm sleeves incorporate black velvet bow decorations that serve not just as accents, but also add dimensional layering to the arms. The off-the-shoulder cut, complemented by the black bows, softens shoulder lines amidst the sharp black-and-white color blocking. Structured fabric used for the white top resists creasing, greatly elevating the overall silhouette when worn.

For the lower half, attention centered on black sheer stockings and platform high-heeled boots. Highly translucent black stockings displayed a subtle sheen under photography lights, flattering leg lines beautifully, while thick-heeled black boots provided sturdy balance support—giving me immense freedom across various poses requiring a cane for stability. To align with her cool persona, makeup featured a matte base with light purple eyeshadow, while blonde short hair reflected an ideal color temperature under indoor lighting. A black beret perched atop the short wig added head presence, secured with hairpins to handle large dynamic movements on site. We had tried alternate stocking options during fitting, ultimately picking this pair as a balanced sweet spot between subtle luster and anti-glare reflection.

An indispensable core element in this look is the purple tentacle prop wrapping around the body. Managing and positioning this translucent gel-textured prop tested our patience both in daily storage and on location. To recreate the slick, reflective sheen from original settings, the photographer and I spent considerable time adjusting winding angles, leveraging spot highlights to illuminate sections of the tentacles. Managing such a bulky prop required extra care regarding spatial movement to prevent blocking key lights or revealing awkward ground setups. The tentacles were surprisingly heavy, relying heavily on gravity, requiring multiple anchor points to hold shape. Though complex props added operational challenge, once coiled perfectly around calves and waist, narrative storytelling instantly infused the composition.

The stage environment at the shoot venue also rendered tremendous help. Moody ambient lighting combined with ground puddle reflections set off the contrast between dark elements and purple tentacles perfectly. The photographer paid careful attention to framing during snapshots, ensuring interactive harmony between my eye gaze and prop extensions, which, enhanced by side-backlight from overhead spotlights, gave character and props compelling dimensional depth. Water reflections and ceiling spotlights joined in a brilliant visual result: dark bottoms and heels seamlessly merged into background shadows, while pushing the bright white top and blonde hair visually forward to form distinct depth of field.

Overall, this was a thoroughly fulfilling photoshoot experience. Despite heavy crowd foot traffic requiring immense concentration to adjust positioning and facial expressions within tight time windows, the mysterious aura delivered in the final photos offered the ultimate reward for our prep work and live coordination. Across hours of setup and actual shooting, physical fatigue ran high—especially handling tentacle prop positioning and mid-shoot micro-adjustments. Yet that marks the dynamic charm distinguishing event photography from studio sessions: event shoots carry organic spontaneity and vivid immersion into actual environments. Cosplay photography extends beyond costume wearing into a secondary interpretation of character presence; this set captured a deeply satisfying moment from our trip to the Dongguan Firefly Anime Game Carnival.
