Deciding to portray Azur Lane's Chen Hai Retrofit stems from a deep appreciation for the unique aesthetic of the Dragon Empery faction. The fusion of traditional Chinese style with anime warship design holds an undeniable allure.
Slipping into this modified black-and-white Dragon Empery Qipao, the first thing I felt was a marvelous visual balance. The structured black tailoring at the chest and waist forms a striking visual anchor against the soft white chiffon outer skirt. A high-slit design paired with over-the-knee black stockings and detailed garter straps highlights a tall, slender silhouette, infusing dignified elegance with understated charm. To capture her cool yet confident demeanor, I wore red contact lenses paired with a black bob with straight bangs and a white headpiece, aiming to recreate her expression down to the finest detail.
Props were the soul of this look. The heavy black feather fan in hand possesses a rich weight, its soft plumage showing a delicate matte texture under the lights. Every sway of the fan lifts the white hem, creating a sharp visual contrast against my black gloves. Meanwhile, a purple paper umbrella adorned with white cranes and pine branches brings the poetic mood of a classical Eastern courtyard into the frame. The hexagonal paper lantern I held cast a warm glow, serving as a natural point of interactive focus before the lens.
The studio set matched the theme flawlessly. Designed like a traditional Chinese courtyard, complete with carved wooden doors and windows, elegant low wooden furniture, and golden faux ginkgo leaves scattered in the background, it evoked a serene autumn atmosphere. Red-and-white paper lanterns suspended in the scene illuminated the moody ambient lighting. The lighting technician utilized a warm key light that played off the black stockings and white skirt, generating layered highlights that gave the image warmth without sacrificing sharpness.
During the shoot, I experimented with various poses to convey the character's formidable poise. Standing with the fan required a straight, tall posture to radiate the composed aura of a Dragon Empery elder sister. In seated compositions, I placed a forefinger lightly against my lips with a playful glint in my eyes to uncover her subtle wit and cleverness. Single-leg standing shots tested shoe support and balance; the white platform soles gripped the wooden floor well, helping me maintain balance during wide movements.
Considering her persona as both a refined Dragon Empery shipgirl and a tactically formidable aircraft carrier, I made subtle adjustments to my posture and facial expressions. Allowing my gaze to drift slightly into the distance evoked a sense of strategic foresight. The outfit's intricate layering—blending black, white, and blue across wide flowing sleeves—created dynamic draping during movement. To maintain clean vertical lines along the high slit, I continuously adjusted the skirt and garter positioning throughout the Cosplay photography session.
Another detail I paid close attention to was hand interaction with the props. Whether gently holding the lantern handle or gracefully unfolding the black feather fan, I carefully controlled finger curvature and tension to make these gestures feel natural to her character. Cosplay is not merely about wearing a costume, but reshaping a character's body language. Within this warm-lit Dragon Empery set, I felt as though I were truly standing on a warship deck amidst blue waves, ginkgo leaves falling on my shoulders, commanding tactical barrages and carrier aircraft.
Overall, the visual tone of this set favors classic sophistication. Rather than leaning into overt sensuality, I sought to let the high slit and black stockings naturally release charm within a dignified framework. The tone and atmosphere were balanced perfectly. Immersing myself in the studio transformed initial nervousness into focused dedication. Merging Dragon Empery poise with valiant combat strength delivered an outcome I am truly proud of, deepening my appreciation for Chen Hai upon reviewing these detailed shots.
