I finally wrapped up sorting through the photo returns from the Chinese Anime Independent Tour today. For this shoot, we chose a dark-themed photography studio, mainly aiming to harness high-contrast lighting to accentuate the anime-style visual texture.
My outfit this time was a classic black-and-white maid look, featuring blue twin tails topped with a delicate white lace headdress. The costume is rich in detail, especially the cut-out accent at the chest. Paired with black garter stockings and chunky platform heels, it delivers quite a striking visual impact. To ensure the wig looked its best, I spent considerable time the previous night sculpting layers with a curling iron and locking them in with styling spray so that it would catch that effortless, wind-swept motion in front of the camera. Putting on this ensemble was quite an undertaking as well—the rear lace-up ribbons and metal buckles required an extra pair of hands to adjust into the perfect fit.
The lighting setup on set really tested our coordination. Photographer Mao E utilized strong top-side rim lighting to carve out facial contours and body lines, which demanded my absolute concentration before the lens with controlled power behind every pose. For example, sitting on a high stool with one hand lightly pinching the hem of the skirt and the other raised in a clenched fist while leaning slightly forward actually put core strength to the test—holding it for extended takes left my lower back rather stiff. However, the dark lighting falling across the leather and lace textures created rich, distinct dimensions that made the final shots immensely satisfying.
I also had the chance to cross paths with several other talented creators in the studio. Eureka's white-haired bunny ear look paired with a red oiled-paper umbrella carried a dreamy traditional Chinese aesthetic; Pudding's blonde hair, crimson eyes, and leather corset radiated a crisp, battle-ready edge; Su'an's blue bikini top paired with glowing dragon-themed props was brimming with sci-fi flair; and Daimao's deep blue hair styled with a biker leather jacket and a colossal weapon looked strikingly badass. During breaks, everyone bounced posing ideas off one another and discussed how different prop textures reflected under studio lights—this shared creative spirit among peers is truly the most captivating aspect of an anime convention.
