[Yae Sakura cosplay] Went to Shoot Cherry Blossoms but Found None, So I Covered My Face with a Blade - Image 2

Tricked by Xiaohongshu into shooting cherry blossoms, I arrived on set only to realize the blooming season was completely off—not a single tree had blossomed. But with all the gear already on, I couldn't let the trip go to waste, so I decided to take this set right beside the park's stone walls and lawn. This time I portrayed Yae Sakura from Honkai Impact 3rd. First, regarding the costume: a white hollowed-out undergarment paired with a black high neck, intricate golden vine patterns on the chest, and waist accessories. Putting it on was genuinely troublesome at first, requiring careful adjustments to fit snugly. The golden snake choker on my neck felt very textured, though a bit heavy. I specifically selected purple colored contacts because of the character design, which made my gaze appear deep and captivating under the light. Styling the pink wig and Animal ears took half a day to achieve that fluffy, well-layered dimension—slightly messy with aesthetic charm, yet not too unruly to preserve the silhouette, which is quite a technical craft in 2D character styling.

During shooting, I worked with two states across the two photos: the first was a direct close-up facing the lens under strong backlight, where the sunlight pierced through the hair strands to form a rainbow-like halo. Reviewing the full-res image afterward, I felt that moment carried a powerful atmosphere. The second shot featured me holding the black-and-gold wooden blade in my mouth. My wrist actually felt sore from holding the blade for so long, so I simply held it between my teeth for a close-up. Because spring is still chilly between warm spells, posing outside for long periods got a bit cold, but to achieve superior texture in this Outdoor photography, I pushed through to capture a few extra takes.

Since these were very close-range shots, the eye makeup was applied heavily—using reddish-toned eyeshadow paired with slender eyeliner, finished with vibrant red lips. For the lighting setup, I specifically emphasized the rim light to make the pink hair and Animal ears appear more translucent, while sharply distinguishing between the costume's white base and black collar. Although the background lacked the sprawling cherry blossom grove I anticipated, perhaps this very simplicity allowed the character's vibrant colors to stand out even more.

The entire shoot was quite relaxed, without overly staged poses, focusing simply on facing the lens to convey the character's persona and demeanor. The composition of these photos primarily highlighted the exquisite makeup, faithful costume details, and a gaze that was slightly haughty yet playful. Furthermore, this outfit doesn't feel constricting during larger movements—the shoulders and arms have plenty of freedom, so whether holding the blade or leaning forward slightly as in photo one, there was no awkward creasing or deformation. I look forward to catching the actual blooming season next time to shoot beneath the cherry blossoms in this outfit again; I'm sure it will look even better against that natural backdrop. Still, making do with what was available by utilizing roadside greenery and stone walls produced a clean simplicity that matched the character wonderfully. Lastly, allow me to share a quick tip on maintaining this gear: white fabrics stain easily, so be extra cautious when eating or drinking. But to achieve higher fidelity for this 2D roleplay, it's completely worth it.
