The essence of the character Izanami lies in her unique charm—controlling life and death, where despair and creation intertwine. For this studio shoot in Nanjing, extensive preparation was required to achieve the ideal visual outcome. From garment tailoring to prop selection, every step was verified repeatedly. The bone motifs and restrictive, bound design of the costume immediately conveyed the character's heavy burden once worn. In terms of makeup, the foundation was kept as pale as possible, focusing on blending deep-red eyeshadow generously around the eyes, paired with a long, straight black wig to emphasize her otherworldly, inhuman divinity in this Onmyoji Izanami cosplay.
The studio was decorated with cascading crimson fabrics, which, paired with overhead red lighting and smoke machines, instantly transformed the space into an oppressive yet tension-filled illusion. The thick black chains hanging in the foreground not only deepened the visual layering, but also gave me behind the lens the illusion of being bound yet overflowing with power. The skull props served as the primary focus of interaction during the shoot—whether resting a skull in one hand or leaning against a skeletal ribcage, each pose demanded precise bodily control.
Throughout the shoot, I explored a variety of postures. For example, reclining on the platform and leaning slightly back, using drifting smoke to partially obscure the line of sight, creating more room for imagination on camera. To ensure body lines remained aesthetically striking, keeping my core engaged was essential over long stretches—especially while wearing the voluminous, heavy greyish-white skirt, where every leg lift or torso twist had to preserve the natural drape of the fabric. Synergy with the photographer was equally critical; we repeatedly communicated and adjusted the placement of a glance or the angle of a hand gesture, striving to deliver the most flawless composition in this Gothic style cosplay.
Looking closely at the light and shadow in the photos, light pierces through the haze onto red drapery and bleached bone, forging a striking chromatic contrast that maximizes visual punch across the entire set. Honestly, the greatest danger in shooting dark-themed characters in Dark style photography is remaining superficial—merely putting on a costume to look edgy. Hence, I continually contemplated Izanami's canonical psychological state, attempting to project a sense of languid yet perilous menace through my gaze.
During our studio session in Nanjing, the weather was actually rather sweltering. Packed with layers of heavy fabric and blazing red light fixtures, the environment felt like an enclosed furnace. Yet every member of the team demonstrated consummate professionalism, constantly testing lights and repositioning props to elevate the quality of this set. The skull props in particular required ongoing angle adjustments so they would blend organically into the scene. Between takes, I checked playback repeatedly to confirm every detail—whether chains were blocking critical poses or red drapes were obstructing facial expressions. This continuous refinement process was immensely rewarding. The entire shoot was physically demanding, especially enduring multiple layers of garments in stifling heat while keeping expressions composed; yet witnessing the breathtaking, tragic brokenness captured on camera caused all fatigue to vanish. Every cosplay endeavor is a brand-new creative journey—I cherish this process of materializing fictional characters into reality, and look forward to embracing even more diverse concepts in the future.
