This Phrolova cosplay project from Wuthering Waves was in pre-production for quite some time, primarily aiming to capture that melancholic, enigmatic gothic atmosphere from the game.
Wardrobe-wise, the lace craftsmanship and high-collar cut of this white dress severely test posture and silhouette; considerable physical conditioning went into supporting the chest structuring and translucent puff sleeves. An outdoor studio set was specially staged in an ancient castle motif, where a black high-back throne and a massive clock dial behind served as crowning focal points. Pairing the white gown with crimson red spider lilies delivered intense visual impact—the classic red, white, and black triad translated phenomenally under low-key cinematography.
For makeup, deliberate red tear streaks were painted beneath the eyes, complementing pale contact lenses to heighten a fragile, shattered visual allure. The wig was selected in mint green, featuring a high-low cut with side braiding to ensure multidimensional depth. To secure convincing frames, I spent considerable time rehearsing violin stances on set; though I have basic familiarity with instruments, drawing a bow while seated on a throne in high heels and a voluminous gown made balancing difficult, requiring constant core and arm tension.
The red spider lily props were handcrafted, with slender red petals and trailing ribbons exhibiting supreme texture under moody chiaroscuro. When sculpting the light, the photographer deliberately knocked down ambient illumination, using rim lights to carve out the silhouette contours and enhance the white dress fabrics and pearl necklace luster. White Lace stockings were an integral piece of the look, paired with crimson high heels to visibly elongate leg lines in full-body compositions.
Although it was a studio shoot, the air conditioning was turned way down to evoke that chill, desolate mood. Fine-tuning the skirt pooling and ribbon draping consumed considerable time, especially holding the floral props naturally while showcasing the dress tailoring. Behind every image lay countless adjustments and takes, from wardrobe preparations to synchronized synergy with the photographer, all to lend this character a three-dimensional presence.
To give the eye region greater depth, extensive blending techniques were employed; the crimson along the lower eyelids utilized specialized pigments to remain luminous on camera without appearing disjointed. The gown consists of numerous tiers: the outermost gossamer fluttered gently in movement, while structured inner petticoats maintained skirt volume. Every set piece—including iron cages and cruciforms—was arranged with intention, blending seamlessly into the overarching gothic backdrop. For the violin sequences, I consulted musician friends to refine bowing postures. The winding of the crimson ribbons was also tested through multiple iterations before settling on a natural, effortless cascade.
A dark gothic project like this presents genuine challenges in lighting and choreography. Illumination cannot be too bright lest it forfeit the mystery, while poses cannot become rigid—they require soft grace tinged with sorrow. The process was exhausting yet deeply rewarding. From conception to completion, every detail was continuously polished, hoping to bring forth a living, breathing Phrolova that delivers a unique visual impact to everyone.
