Cutting straight to the chase, let's talk about this poolside convention shoot. The most immediate takeaway was the immense advantage of using a wide aperture in complex outdoor environments. At a bustling convention with heavy foot traffic and cluttered backgrounds, I specifically requested a large-aperture lens paired with a high-speed shutter to capture water splashes in this Anime-style photography session. This not only dramatically blurred distracting backgrounds, but also focused visual attention squarely on the character and airborne water droplets, creating a translucent, refreshing summer coolness. We scheduled the shoot for after 3:00 PM when the lighting angle was superior, so the shimmering ripples across the water surface wouldn't overexpose facial features.
The first look featured a two-tone red-and-purple wig paired with a white ruffled cardigan and a plaid mini-skirt. To suit the summer theme, lightweight and breathable fabrics were chosen for this Summer outfit. Sitting by the pool and kicking up water was quite a test of shutter timing. The instant the water splashed, complemented by the shallow depth of field from the wide aperture, brought out instant, vivid depth. When capturing dynamic water splashes like this, the shutter speed must be at least 1/500s or faster, while still ensuring adequate light intake; otherwise, the water surface easily turns into a blurry smear.
Later, I switched into a short white wig and a striped hoodie, trying out more relaxed, casual poses by the pool ladder. This outfit leaned into a leisurely summer vacation vibe, with bright orange sunglasses serving as a crucial accent popping out against the cool-toned pool background. During shooting, we incorporated a cartoon backdrop board from the water park; although vibrant with multiple colors, the wide-aperture blur ensured the subject stood out distinctly from the frame.
The underwater two-person shot was an entirely new endeavor. Several of us floated in the water with swim rings; while the surface reflection provided natural fill light for our faces, the undulating water ripples made stabilizing ourselves quite difficult. We had to remain as stationary as possible in the water while managing our expressions, preventing underwater optical refraction from ruining the wig's texture. Waterproof gear for the camera and lenses was an absolute must when shooting in the water, and holding onto each other helped increase safety.
Beyond water shots, we also experimented extensively with solo frames on land. Occasionally, using the stainless steel pool ladder as a foreground element enhanced spatial depth and framing. Deliberately dipping legs into the pool to kick up spray and freezing the droplets with high-speed shutter dramatically amplified the dynamic energy and visual impact of these Convention photos.
Shooting outdoors in the summer is truly a double test of physical stamina and willpower, especially when donning heavy wigs while maintaining peak performance under the sun. However, being able to produce satisfying cosplay photos makes every ounce of effort completely worthwhile. This outdoor pool setting not only provided a naturally reflective water surface, but also allowed water splashes and swim ring props to enrich the fun and storytelling of the frame—ideal for a summer-themed Poolside photoshoot.
