I've actually had this Hsin cosplay outfit for quite a while, but hadn't found the right opportunity to shoot it. This time, my schedule finally aligned with the photographer @Karis, and we decided to recreate this deeply oriental fantasy setting in the studio.
Cosplaying Hsin from Wuthering Waves is most challenging when it comes to capturing her temperament. She possesses both the agile allure of a fox spirit and a mysterious aura belonging to the game's world. To ensure great photo results, I put a massive amount of effort into hair and makeup. I chose a silver-white wig with a slight black-and-grey gradient; hair smoothness is crucial because I wanted to achieve that flowing, ethereal feel. The fox ears on top of the head are custom-made with an extremely high plush texture, instantly giving off a fox-like vibe the moment I put them on. To add a sense of extravagance, I layered numerous golden hair accessories and red-and-white tassels over the ears and hair. Although quite heavy, the visual layering presented in front of the lens is simply stunning. Because the plush volume of the fox ears is quite large, they easily cast shadows on the face during lighting setup, so I constantly communicated angles with the photographer—tilting my head slightly allowed the light to land precisely on my eyes, accentuating the killer gaze.
The clothing features a classic black, red, and white color palette. A black tube top serves as the base, overlaid with a bright red wide-sleeve jacket with white gauze patchwork on the cuffs, which looks exceptionally fluid when moving. The golden flower accessory on the chest is also a finishing touch, with metal chains and red-and-gold tassels hanging down, adding a touch of gorgeous retro feel. The lower body features a high-slit design; for this photo set, I deliberately got red manicures and painted red totems on my arms, which even to myself felt exceptionally detailed. The sleeves of this outfit are very wide, which can easily make one look bulky, but through arm placement and forward-leaning body postures, the shoulder and neck lines can be showcased beautifully.
The set design on the shooting day was exceptionally thoughtful. The background featured a huge glowing moon prop, flanked by white cherry blossom branches and flowing tulle curtains. Coupled with paper umbrellas and lanterns, the entire atmosphere was maxed out. Lighting is truly the core of this photo set; the cool blue primary light source intertwined with warm yellow rim lighting made the subject's skin texture and the clothing's red hues extraordinarily textured. During the shoot, what impressed me most was the constant adjustment of various poses. Being barefoot and sitting on a white plush rug meant the ground was actually quite hard, making my legs prone to numbness after sitting for too long. However, to present that lazy yet seductive vibe, maintaining the extension of body lines was mandatory. Holding a pink folding fan in hand, whether half-covering the face or gently resting it against the shoulder, required maintaining wonderful softness in the fingers. One photo features me stretching one arm upward, fingertips painted with red nail polish matching the red arm tattoos, with a slightly arrogant gaze in my eyes. At that exact second, I felt I truly understood King Zhou's happiness. Indeed, facing such styling, it's hard not to fall in love.
I always used to feel that cosplaying characters with animal ears easily looks overly juvenile, but Hsin's character design gives her a sense of maturity and enchantment on top of cuteness. I tried to break through potential stereotypes of the original styling through eye contact and micro-expressions. For instance, the gaze looking at the lens needed a hint of aggression, while the corners of the mouth held an elusive smile. Shooting this photo set was not only a test of physical stamina but also a wonderful attempt at character interpretation. Although I didn't deliberately imitate any specific demeanor, I was naturally drawn by this outfit and setting into that fantasy world. The entire process was thoroughly enjoyable, and the resulting light, shadow, and texture made me feel all preliminary preparations were entirely worthwhile. I hope this attempt brings everyone a fresh visual experience.
