Today, I'm sharing a set of convention photos of my Arima Kana cosplay. The design layers of this idol outfit are incredibly rich; the first time I held it, I found the details fascinating. The top is made of dark blue vertical-striped fabric paired with white puff sleeves and a neckerchief, accented with gold armor-style shoulder pieces. The waist features a brown leather belt tied with a gold cord, while the lower half is a patchwork skirt combining plaid and stripes, edged with black ruffles that enhance the overall volume. When wearing this idol outfit, I paid close attention to where the belt cinched—with so many layers, it easily looks bulky if not cinched tightly. The wig is a reddish-purple bob cut; to recreate authentic texture for anime-style photography, I mixed in a few subtly shimmering strands that sparkle under the sunlight. Combined with red contact lenses and slightly cool, glamorous makeup, I aimed to capture the true aura of an idol on stage.
The convention was packed that day, so it took a while to find this relatively open spot under the bridge. The natural light here was very even without harsh direct glare, and the background of light-gray concrete pillars and railings naturally isolated the subject with a wide aperture blur. To capture the precise moment the skirt flared up, the photographer and I coordinated for a long time. In the first full-body shot, I bent one knee and extended my right hand forward—a pose requiring tight core engagement so the flare of the skirt forms an elegant curve. In the second shot with the salute gesture, the focus is on eye gaze; even though it was at a convention, I looked into the lens as if standing on a real stage. The third photo features hands crossed over the chest—a classic idol performance pose where I deliberately emphasized tension in the fingers. The fourth pose, turning sideways with my head tilted slightly down, was meant to showcase the back layers of the outfit and the skirt silhouette, carrying a more introspective mood.
During the shoot, I wore black platform boots. Though heavy, they provided solid support, allowing me to spin and jump with confidence. The true meaning of convention photos lies in capturing authentic moments, so I aimed for dynamic candid shots rather than stiff posing. The classic combination of stripes and plaid in this outfit, paired with cool-toned lighting, brought the overall atmosphere very close to the stage presence of the original work. Every time I do cosplay, I spend extensive time fine-tuning costume details—from the snugness of the sleeves to the angle of the belt, everything impacts the final presentation. Even though walking around all day was exhausting, seeing the graceful flare of the skirt in the final photos made all the preparation worthwhile. If given the chance later, I'd love to shoot in a more open location with flash lighting to explore different light and shadow dynamics. The convention vibe is always energizing; meeting fellow fans who share the same passion and exchanging creative ideas makes these memories even richer.
Since we shot in the afternoon, the light under the bridge shifted periodically. Whenever clouds covered the sun, the light softened like a giant softbox; once the sun broke through, we had to adjust positions and use pillar shadows to prevent facial highlights from blowing out. The entire session was physically demanding, especially jumping and twirling repeatedly in place to catch the flying skirt. The single-leg stance in photo one required foot strength for balance while keeping the upper body relaxed to project idol-like lightness. The black gloves made finger dexterity slightly clumsy, but because every micro-gesture is magnified in anime-style photography, I constantly reminded myself to keep my knuckles taut for sharper, more expressive gestures. While stunning, the accessories posed challenges: the gold shoulder pieces occasionally tapped my chin when moving, reminding me to keep my neck straight. The hanging gold cord on the belt was another subtle detail whose drape directly affected the proportions of the lower body. Throughout the shoot, I tested various angles—looking straight ahead with confidence or glancing down sideways in contemplation—to keep the photo set dynamic. For any cosplayer, every anime convention is a learning experience, not just for showing off prepared costumes, but for noticing areas to improve. For instance, I noticed the skirt layers occasionally tangled during rapid poses; next time, I might apply anti-static treatment to the petticoat.
