This Honkai: Star Rail collaboration Tohsaka Rin styling had a quite lengthy preparation period from receiving the character sheet to the final shoot. The red patent leather jacket serves as the visual core of the entire look; this highly reflective material boasts exceptional texture in front of the lens, yet it also presents considerable challenges for lighting. During shooting, if the main light source's position deviated even slightly, large areas of blown-out white highlights would appear on the clothing, masking the original tailoring lines. Therefore, the lighting technician had to meticulously control the lighting ratio and angles, while also applying rim light to the edges to outline the patent leather's three-dimensionality—this is precisely the most energy-consuming part of photographing such materials.
In terms of makeup and styling, to recreate Tohsaka Rin's unique temperament, a great deal of effort went into the eye makeup. A large area of red-toned eyeshadow was blended, with the outer eye corners slightly deepened and elongated, paired with red circle lenses to make the gaze look sharper and more profound. The wig is dark brown long curly hair with trimmed blunt bangs, wearing iconic black hair accessories on both sides. To keep the hair strands from looking stiff under strong light, layered treatment was deliberately performed, and styling spray was continuously used during the shoot to fine-tune the positions of stray hairs.
Regarding costume pairing, the inner black high-necked bodysuit and the white pleated skirt form a classic red, black, and white color clash. The material of the Black stockings was chosen after a long selection process; to achieve a balance between texture and avoiding excessive reflection, this slightly sheer-skin style was ultimately finalized, which flatters the leg shape wonderfully when worn. The white high-heeled short boots on the feet not only echo the white skirt in color but also physically elongate the leg lines. Paired with detailed accessories such as metal chains and waist straps, the layering of the overall look truly pops out.
The props used in this shoot are also worth mentioning. For the silver dagger held in hand, the gripping posture and wrist flipping angle were adjusted repeatedly, paired with the posture of sitting on the desktop with crossed legs, attempting to convey that aggressive yet understated sense of danger. The scene was chosen in a vintage old study, featuring a dark wooden desk, rows of bookshelves behind, heavy red curtains, and vintage teacups, metal birdcages, and gear models on the desk. The superposition of these elements, combined with the supplementary lighting from a warm yellow crystal chandelier, created a strong sense of dramatic conflict. To make the frame more tension-filled, composition and pose designs referenced many vintage mystery-style photographic works. Under low-light environments paired with specific lighting setups, facial shadow handling is extremely important; one must not only maintain the facial features' three-dimensionality but also ensure the catchlights in the eyes are sufficiently bright. The entire team poured immense thought into refining the texture of light and shadow, and I hope everyone notices these minor details when viewing the photos.
