[Yu cosplay] Arknights: Red and Blue Color Clash in the Industrial Ruins

Joining an 80-person Arknights mega group shoot, the photographer sent over the returned photos on the very same day, so I naturally decided to share a same-day return as well. Delivering photos on the same day or the next seems to be standard practice in the cosplay community. Honestly, for me, post-processing was essentially just minor skin smoothing, as the red and blue color clash lighting on-site was already stunning. Shooting in real Industrial ruins is completely different from a studio; this authentic abandoned factory environment combined with the red accent lighting instantly maxed out the atmosphere.

Cosplaying this character was quite a styling challenge. Red hair paired with black horns and elf ears; the blue trench coat looks light, but to ensure good draping, the fabric is actually quite thick, packed with numerous straps and decorations. To keep the horns secured on both sides, I had to be extra careful when looking down or making large movements to prevent them from dropping off. My favorite part is the combination of white wide-leg pants and the red half-skirt. Moving around in these black-and-red sneakers took some effort for action shots, but the results were fantastic—especially in a squatting pose, where the tail prop rested on the ground for support, making my center of gravity feel much more natural. There are also semi-sheer arm guards and gloves, which easily got disarranged with larger movements, but a slight touch-up in post-processing easily resolved that.

Photographer Yishi's candid snapping pace was very swift, never keeping anyone stuck rigidly in place holding a pose. We had communicated beforehand wanting an aura that blended a touch of lethality with effortless relaxation, so shooting was actually quite breezy. Regarding retouching, I fully agree with the photographer's philosophy that preserving texture is paramount. Aside from basic line refinement and slight skin smoothing, most of the effort went into balancing the contrast between the red lighting and the cool-toned background. After all, lighting in the ruins is complex; red light is hard light, and slight tweaks nicely brought out the patchwork and knit textures of the costume.

With 80 people in the mega group, everyone had their own shooting rhythm. Finding a photographer you click with instantly is truly rare, especially having to avoid other people wandering into the frame within limited shooting spots—that's the toughest part of a mega group shoot. Because photos were delivered so quickly, there was plenty of room for selection; many spontaneous dynamic snaps looked even better than fixed poses. Lighting during the shoot truly makes a massive impact on the final photos: red ambient light falling on the blue coat created a unique purplish-red tone, giving it an exceptionally textured look. While I wasn't used to it at first, I gradually learned how to work with the light and angles. I especially love the squatting shot, which flatters the leg lines and, supported by the tail prop touching the ground, gives the composition great tension and an undeniably cool edge.

Looking at the returned photos delivered on the same day, although some spots lost focus due to fast motion, the overall atmosphere was captured masterfully, brimming with a wasteland aesthetic. Compared to heavily airbrushed photos with crowded micro-details, these straight-out-of-camera shots retaining film grain and raw grit have much more flavor. Delivering photos on the same day is tiring, but it saves the hassle of endless communication and waiting—a truly efficient outcome. This outfit is remarkably suited for large areas of red tonal lighting, projecting a vibe that is both cold and boldly expressive, which perfectly met expectations. Finishing the photos made today's shoot completely fulfilling; logging this here as an archival record of this mega group event!
