Portraying Castorice from Honkai Impact 3rd at the Firefly Con was an intensely paced experience. Preparing for this purple-hued cosplay required extensive advance work: the wig demanded precise cutting to sculpt the character's bob silhouette while carefully concealing the elf ear props to achieve natural pointed ears on camera. The makeup emphasized bold eyeshadow and blush—pairing blue contacts with reddish-pink tones and glossy lip tint to capture that signature blend of lively charm and enigmatic allure.
The garment's layered construction posed another challenge. The navy halter bodice featured 3D purple floral accents across the chest, anchored by an intricate black cutout choker and a glossy studded belt at the waist, both requiring reinforced fastenings to prevent slipping during long convention walks. The long purple fingerless arm sleeves were detailed with calculated ruched folds to maintain a clean, architectural aesthetic. The skirt design was truly breathtaking—an asymmetrical high-low cut with an outer navy layer printed with butterfly wing venation over an inner white pleated skirt and sheer tulle lining, crowned behind by an enormous trailing purple butterfly wing. In motion or during spins, the skirt blossomed effortlessly, making every frame pop.
At a bustling convention, posture and timing are paramount. The lighting at Firefly Con was complex, with harsh ground glare and elevated overpasses in the background; I favored backlit and side-lit angles to soften facial chiaroscuro. For full-body frames, dynamic, expansive gestures worked best—such as the stance in image six, bending one knee with center of gravity shifted forward while extending both arms outward, allowing the skirt to billow and maxing out visual tiers. Close-ups relied heavily on hands and emotive nuances: brushing fingers against the cheek, looking straight down the lens, or accenting with lace and pearl props added storytelling depth. Often, complex expressions weren't necessary—a slight upward chin tilt paired with a languid, detached gaze aligned perfectly with the character's persona.
The footwear was another highlight: black chunky platform heels adorned with purple ribbon bows and pearl chains visually elongated leg lines, though walking outdoors in platform heels eventually grew tiring, requiring quick seated breaks between takes. The heart of Convention photography lies in spontaneous snapshots; with such a kinetic costume, rigid posing is unnecessary, as natural moments of turning around, smoothing hair, or adjusting hemlines often yield the most organic captures.
Regarding the shoot's rhythm, communicating desired poses and angles with the photographer beforehand proved invaluable. For sweeping skirt movement, gentle spins on the spot or continuous burst captures while walking worked wonders. To navigate heavy convention crowds, low-angle upward compositions or elevated downward angles helped eliminate bystander clutter from the background. In post-production, I preserved natural skin tones and garment textures while bumping up purple saturation slightly to accentuate the butterfly wing patterns, finishing with a subtle lens blur to isolate the subject. Meticulous planning of posing pathways and framing angles allowed us to secure a deeply satisfying set of Convention photos despite tight schedules and dense crowds.
