[Yunli Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail's Barefoot Little Sword Immortal — Candied Haws and Warm Chinese Light

We finally finished shooting this Yunli cosplay set for Honkai: Star Rail; from hair and makeup to the actual shoot, it took quite a bit of time, but the resulting photos are extremely satisfying.

Regarding the costume, the details are actually very intricate. The top features an off-the-shoulder design with a neck collar; the ring of white fur around the neckline not only adds cuteness but also creates visual depth. What draws the eye most is the large gem-styled chest pendant connected with red cords and gold metallic pieces, providing impressive texture. The sleeve cuffs showcase a blue-and-white color scheme, with an asymmetrical draped design on the left arm that adds a breezy flow during dynamic movements. The blue-green cloud-patterned skirt on the lower half is truly the soul of this Anime cosplay outfit—the golden wave patterns gleam subtly under the lights, and while the fabric is light, its drape is fantastic, naturally fanning out its folds whether sitting or standing.

For hair, it's a short black pixie-style cut that feels wonderfully spirited. The small gold crown on top adorned with blue-green accents adds a touch of gorgeous detail. The advantage of short hair is how clean and refreshing it looks—no need to worry about tangling or blocking the view like long hair, and it fits her energetic, playful personality traits perfectly.

For this shoot, we specifically chose candied haws as part of our Cosplay props; holding this bright red stick in hand instantly made me feel more energetic. We also paired it with a small gold magical artifact featuring yellow tassels in the other hand to enrich frame elements. To faithfully recreate character lore, I went barefoot, tying a red cord anklet around my ankle—small accessories like these might seem subtle, but they look incredible in close-up shots.

We specifically chose an indoor studio steeped in Chinese charm for our Chinese-style photography session. The centerpiece was a carved dark wooden Luohan daybed covered with a white cushioned mat, making it convenient to pose in various reclining or leaning stances. The background featured bamboo blind wood-grid screen dividers, with a few dried flower branches inserted obliquely on the left, and a warm yellow paper lantern suspended above. This environment perfectly matched the character's traditional xianxia fantasy tone.

As for lighting, the photographer used cinematic light and shadow techniques. A soft warm key light was directed from the front, making skin tone appear fair and radiant while flawlessly rendering the main white, blue, and gold costume tones. Meanwhile, a cold blue and purple ambient light setup was angled from the rear-right side. This interplay between cool and warm lighting easily heightened character mystery and grandeur, giving standard flat Chinese-style furniture a much deeper sense of spatial layering.

In terms of posing, we attempted to blend lazy poise with spirited agility. From stretching long legs while leaning on the daybed, to playfully tilting my head toward the camera while holding the candied haws, to turning sideways to reveal garment tailoring, every movement aimed to hit that unique contrast of a child-like figure holding a heavy broadsword. Though holding candied haws brought a touch of youthful innocence, my facial gaze and poise maintained a cool, confident composure.

For makeup, since the character's eyes are highly distinctive, I specifically prepared blue-to-purple gradient colored contact lenses, paired with slightly flushed eyeshadow and pink-tinted lips to evoke that youthful yet proudly willful "mini-adult" feel. The wig was finely trimmed beforehand to ensure bangs and sideburns didn't obstruct facial expressions during shooting.

Honestly, seeing tags like "toddler food" in discussions was quite surprising at first. Indeed, holding candied haws while wearing this dress creates an undeniably adorable impression—like a little girl who loves sweets. But as a cosplayer who understands her lore, I know she is a formidable little sword immortal wielding a heavy broadsword; this gap moe is genuinely delightful. The final result of this set strikes a balance between cuteness and the character's inherent imposing presence.

On the day of the shoot, the temperature was quite chilly, and going barefoot left the soles of my feet icy cold. However, seeing the photo quality on camera made all the hardship completely worthwhile. The makeup artist and photographer worked in perfect synchronization; almost every raw shot boasted great composition, requiring only minor color adjustments in post-processing to retain true light-and-shadow effects. The costume fabric and sizing fit like a glove with no awkward creases, which heavily tested the photographer's angles—and the final photos cleverly avoided any rigid dead zones. Stepping into this role for Yunli cosplay was truly a wonderful experience.
