In the Chinese garden chosen for our Duo outdoor cosplay shoot, sunlight filtered through the corridors onto the flagstone pavement, accentuating the vibrant contrast between the red-and-gold spear-wielding styling and the bright yellow-and-black Chinese-style cosplay short outfit. Despite running around all day for the outdoor shoot, seeing the vivid color contrast and the signature character synergy in the final photos made it completely worthwhile. The black tiles and white walls of the classical architecture provided a great aesthetic contrast against the garments' textures. Leveraging the depth of the pillars and lush surrounding greenery freed the frame from studio monotony, giving the scene room to truly breathe.
The styling on the right, featuring a red robe over a white base layer for Yun Ying cosplay, was indeed a considerable challenge. The long polearm prop required solid hand support to coordinate movements, and to maintain the prop's proportions and smooth lines in the frame, we invested a lot of effort beforehand into tuning the materials of this red-and-gold spear. The high-tied brownish-black hairpiece and the red-and-green coronet on the wig could easily shift out of place, so half of my attention during shooting was spent checking if the hair was tidy. For makeup, to accentuate the spirit in her gaze, I specifically adjusted the red eyeshadow and elongated eyeliner curves; under sunlight, this produced a softer texture than indoor studio lighting, preserving the character's youthful and heroic presence.
On the left, the Mayene cosplay costume with a yellow sleeveless top and shorts added a nimble, agile charm. The color clash of bright yellow and black trim is incredibly photogenic, flattering the skin tone under natural light. While this midriff-baring, sporty design allowed for expansive, dynamic poses that nicely showcased leg contours, walking on outdoor lawns required extra caution regarding insects and fabric snagging. The golden choker around the neck harmonized with the yellow diamond emblem on the belt, adding distinctive character recognizability. The blonde wig was styled into a high ponytail, with wisps of bangs framing the face to maintain a playful, capable aura from both front and profile angles.
The theme for this shoot was established early on around the core concept of "Top-Jungle Sisters Ganking Together." In Honor of Kings lore and gameplay, these two characters naturally share strong tactical synergy through their skill mechanics. Expressing this teamwork required us to synchronize our pacing and movements beforehand. For example, in the third photo with the shoulder clasp and slight side-turn, we had to ensure neither obscured the other's facial features while allowing the polearm prop and flowing sleeves to overlap naturally. This interactive chemistry is often the most captivating aspect of Duo outdoor cosplay, turning the intimate comrade relationship from in-game lore into tangible, evocative imagery.
For ambient lighting, we avoided harsh direct noon sunlight, opting instead for the dappled light and shadows beneath the trees in the afternoon. This angle prevented harsh facial shadows while allowing the metallic pendants and golden embroidery on the garments to catch just the right glint of light. While touching up makeup between takes, we noticed that the flame-shaped tip of the spear prop caught gorgeous rim lighting in backlight, so we added several backlit compositions. Although the discard rate was slightly higher due to expression control and windblown hair, the selected photos delivered thoroughly satisfying quality.
Naturally, being the cosplayers in front of the lens, physical fatigue after a full day was inevitable. Especially in an open garden park, dodging passersby wandering into frame while maintaining in-character immersion required constant focus; after each set, we checked raw shots to ensure expressions and postures met our vision. Exceptional cosplay works are never merely a piling on of costumes and wigs, but a collaborative process where the photographer, stylist, and cosplayers find the optimal balance within a given environment. Capturing this passion for Honor of Kings against a classical garden backdrop was the most fulfilling creative endeavor for me at this stage.
