This time, I'm sharing a cosplay of Shu's Spring Banquet skin from Arknights. The weather happened to be overcast on the day of the shoot, so we embraced the mood and captured a version steeped in an Overcast moody vibe. Perfecting this Chinese-style cosplay required immense thought from test makeup to the official shoot. Shu's Spring Banquet outfit features a distinctive palette: an iconic bright yellow inner layer paired with oversized magenta oversleeves and a dark asymmetrical maxi skirt trimmed with delicate white lace, creating a vibrant color contrast. Recreating the character's headpiece was a pivotal focus: the gradient blue dragon horns had to be anchored securely to the wig while preserving balanced proportions. The wig featured a pale blonde base with blue highlights, woven into a thick plait adorned with small pink and white blossoms. Paired with pointed elf ears and yellow gloves, the complete look instantly unlocked a vivid 2D anime charm.
Shooting on an overcast day presents challenges for both cosplayer and photographer. Without direct sunlight, the ambient light becomes exceptionally soft with fewer facial shadows, yet it also risks appearing flat and lacking tonal depth. To tackle this, we utilized reflectors to restore facial dimension and framed against deep-green tropical foliage, allowing the bright yellow and magenta tones of the costume to pop vividly against dark green undertones. In the first shot, I sat on a rustic wooden bench framed by dense greenery and stone pillars, showcasing the tiered skirt drape and platform sandals through a relaxed seated pose. In the second shot, I stood behind wooden railings, using blurred foreground leaves as gentle framing elements to draw the lens into a waist-up close-up that spotlighted facial makeup details and headpiece ornaments.
In designing poses and expressions around the Spring Banquet theme, I aimed for a gentle, poised, yet aloof composure. The diffused overcast lighting stripped away harsh warmth, introducing a quiet tranquility that aligned effortlessly with this dignified, subtly melancholic aura. The garment materials boast rich textural layers, particularly the flowing magenta sleeves, which held a graceful drape through every movement. Though the temperature was brisk and the overcast weather prolonged our shooting schedule, the final images turned out remarkably satisfying. Recreating a character—from ironing fabrics and styling wigs to channeling their essence within a specific skin—is always a refreshing creative journey.
