This cosplay project features Yangyang from Wuthering Waves, specifically her Xuanling outfit. To faithfully bring this character to life, a great deal of thought went into pre-production. The costume itself has intricate layers: a black inner base with jacquard dark patterns, layered beneath a semi-translucent blue-and-white gradient chiffon robe, with cloud and wave motifs printed along the sleeves and hem. The waist is detailed with elaborate metallic buckles, blue satin ribbons, and feather ornaments. To guarantee premium fabric texture, we compared multiple material suppliers, striving to create a sharp contrast between lightweight breeziness and rigid metallic accessories in this Wuthering Waves cosplay.
The wig was another key focus of this styling. The base hair is black, featuring a vibrant splash of bright blue along the inner layers and tips, crowned with an ahoge strand at the top. I trimmed and styled the wig beforehand, setting the sideburns firmly in place. Paired with blue colored contacts, I strove to embody the character's serene, scholarly elegance. The makeup emphasized a clean, translucent eye look paired with true red lips, maintaining a natural yet powerful aesthetic rather than being overly heavy.
Two distinct sets of props were prepared: a Chinese calligraphy brush with an unrolled letter scroll, and a vibrant blue longsword etched with red-and-gold patterns. The shooting location was set by a shallow water pool against a clean, gradient-blue backdrop. To honor the character's visual design, I opted for a Barefoot photoshoot. Sitting on the black platform with my bare feet dipped into the water, the temperature was quite chilly, yet I maintained my posture to preserve the nuanced ripples and reflections in the water.
Holding a brush versus wielding a sword evoke entirely different states of mind. With the brush and letter, one must project stillness, focus, and poise, requiring constant fine-tuning of finger grip and eye focus. When brandishing the longsword in one hand, the spine and shoulders had to be held straight with firm wrist engagement, allowing the blue patterns along the blade to visually resonate with the character. The photographer primarily used expansive cool-toned lighting, but subtly layered warm fill lights around the face and metallic accessories, creating a dynamic contrast between warm and cool so the image wouldn't appear flat.
The metallic arm bracers and leg rings naturally restricted movement, feeling tight whenever bending or sitting cross-legged, so I frequently readjusted their placement around my joints between takes. The entire shoot lasted about four hours—from makeup to wrap-up, every limb angle and gaze direction went through continuous experimentation. Through this Traditional Chinese style cosplay Barefoot photoshoot, I hope everyone can feel the unwavering resilience beneath the character's quiet exterior, which was the core quality I wanted to convey most when preparing this Yangyang cosplay from Wuthering Waves.
