Sorting through my photo library, I uncovered these outdoor shots from an earlier convention. For this shoot, my partner and I portrayed that underrated mother-daughter pair from Detective Conan: I did Ran Mori cosplay, and she went as Eri Kisaki cosplay. Taking these photos happened simply because we were worn out from roaming the convention floors; spotting stone steps in front of a clean white exterior wall with sunlight washing over it, we immediately spread down a mat to rest and grab a few snaps. Holding blue document folders as props, we originally aimed for an academic, professional aura, but as shooting progressed, it devolved into spontaneous comedy.
First, my own styling: Ran's uniform is timeless—a deep navy-black blazer paired with a matching pleated skirt and crisp white shirt underneath. The absolute soul of the look is that pure emerald-green necktie. I carefully trimmed the wig, and while her signature gravity-defying horn-drill peak at the crown was tricky, it held quite securely. Brisk outdoor winds that day easily whipped long straight strands across my face, so keeping the hair in check was a constant task.
As for my partner's Eri Kisaki cosplay look, she nailed that maternal maturity to absolute perfection. Calling it 'maternal' is an entirely glowing compliment—it channels that composed, razor-sharp, and subtly tsundere aura of an elite defense attorney. Her pale grey-blue tailored blazer was crisp, layered over a deep purple turtleneck knit. The color-blocking between purple and light blue worked brilliantly, delivering executive sophistication without dullness. Donning black-rimmed glasses, styling a touch of effortless texture into her curls, and rounding it off with a pencil skirt and nude Stockings dialed her commanding presence up instantly.
Sitting side-by-side, the contrast became effortless: Ran still radiated student youthfulness, while Eri Kisaki exuded pure grown-up sophistication. Carrying document folders, we initially sought to evoke the tension of reviewing case files together. In reality, neither of us could keep a straight face. The shot where I look down pointing at my tie while she peers at me with the folder was pure happenstance—a sudden gust of wind had knocked my necktie askew, and her candid reaction was captured right as I leaned down to fix it. Eventually, we abandoned the serious 'elite attorney and high schooler' dynamic and just bantered freely. In one frame, she reached over to adjust the spiked peak on my wig after the adhesive loosened slightly. Our photographic chemistry is naturally effortless—no rigid acrobatics needed; chatting about fun sights from the convention or laughing about how hard it was to touch up makeup in the wind yielded the most authentic, organic candid shots.
This classic franchise look rarely surfaces at modern expos, so calling it an underrated pairing is completely accurate. Sourcing well-tailored vintage costumes with premium fabrics is challenging nowadays, which is why we held onto these archives until now. Throughout the shoot, we strove to stay faithful to the canonical personalities; beyond the mother-daughter bond, we focused on channeling the nuanced familiarity found in their shared everyday and professional dynamics.
The magic of Convention photos lies within these unscripted snapshots. They lack the flawless perfection of studio strobes, yet natural daylight and winds fluttering through hair lend tactile realism to fabric folds and wig textures. This set is a fond archive entry—from walking the expo in the morning to finding angles outdoors in the afternoon, it felt like an easygoing, refreshing day out.
