Rushing to meet the submission deadline for the PSD Annual Gala truly turned me into a bona fide 'deadline master'—retouching and typesetting non-stop around the clock, finally sliding my submission in right at the wire. Participation is what counts, after all! This time, I compiled several distinct cosplay sets in one go, bringing together all the creative concepts I've been eager to shoot recently into a single realized showcase.
First up is the blue-and-white Lolita look. To cultivate a cool, dreamy fairy-tale ambiance, we built an indoor set. The background featured wrought-iron chairs, angel statuettes, and white window frames, paired with expansive cool-blue ambient lights and a soft cool-white key light. This preserved genuine skin textures while making the blue dress look exquisitely translucent. For the wardrobe, I chose puff sleeves and a lace apron design; my absolute favorite detail was the blue-and-white checkered Stockings, which, paired with fur-accented platform shoes, lengthened my silhouette remarkably—making any casual seated pose look effortlessly picturesque.
Next came two entirely different dark aesthetic series. One was a Gothic style featuring a black gown and a wide-brimmed feathered hat. To dress that decrepit, enigmatic setting, we deliberately filled the background with crisscrossing cobwebs, vintage wooden cabinets, and glittering crystal candelabras. I used only the faint flicker of the candelabras as the key light, set against dark velvet drapes to channel an eerie, secretive mood. The other set featured blue hair with a black gown, accented by blue satin ribbons and sequined ankle boots. For this, I reclined against a dark leather sofa draped with a white faux-fur blanket; the cool-toned lighting gave the frame an aloof, premium finish brimming with tactile richness.
To showcase even greater versatility, I also explored warm-toned aesthetics. One coordinate featured silver-white hair with blue streaks, antler-like horns, and animal ears, paired with a yellow-orange top and a red plush fur stole. To match this fantastical, classic Eastern vibe, the set incorporated rockeries, miniature censer burners, and persimmon props, all bathed in warm yellow-orange lighting that felt wonderfully gentle. Another look featured pink braided hair with pink furry ears in an exotic fantasy style—a white-and-gold crop top layered with lavish golden arm cuffs and anklets. To emphasize opulence, we arranged golden fringe drapes and birdcages in the background, adding shimmering golden bokeh flare effects in post-production.
Finally, there was the shoot beneath blooming sakura for a Cherry blossom outdoor scene. The weather that day was gorgeous with brilliant sunshine. Wearing a red-and-white ruffled dress and holding a long staff adorned with red ribbons, I posed for low-angle shots under the pink blossoms. Outdoor light may be unpredictable, but natural sunlight is truly the finest filter: backlit angles separated the dress tiers crisply, filling the entire photograph with vibrant springtime vitality.
Every shoot involves a mountain of meticulous preparation behind the scenes—from sourcing costumes, makeup, and props, styling wigs, to on-site set design, lighting calibration, and the final stages of retouching and color grading. Working with cool blue tones and dark aesthetics in the studio often demanded constant repositioning of light stands, even pulling electrical cables myself. Yet the instant the final frames come together, every ounce of exhaustion feels justified. Gathering these multifaceted works for the PSD Annual Gala serves as a rewarding personal recap of my creative journey over this past season.
