This photoshoot for Blue Reimu cosplay from Touhou Project was conducted as a Seaside location shoot. The biggest challenge during this session was the wind: the fierce sea breeze made controlling the skirt hem, veil, and wig exceptionally difficult, requiring us to seize the brief pauses between gusts to capture the most natural fluttering motion. Before shooting, I added subtle weights along the skirt hem to prevent exposure or wardrobe issues. The bow headdress was prone to being flipped over by gusts, so I reinforced it with pins in advance, while keeping the makeup waterproof and sweatproof.

In terms of posing, controlling arm elevation and wrist angles was essential to convey the airy lightness of the long sleeves and lace. When holding the staff adorned with red-and-white diamond streamers, I had to consider not only its center of gravity, but also its compositional interplay with the crashing waves in the background to keep the lines clean and crisp. Regarding lighting, this Cosplay photoshoot made extensive use of backlighting and rim-lighting, utilizing the shimmering ocean surface as a natural canvas, paired with subtle highlight glow to craft a dreamy, cool-toned atmosphere. Throughout this process, the photographer continuously sought the best vantage points to capture my most natural expressions, occasionally getting their shoes soaked by crashing waves.

Toward the end of the shoot as the sunset began to descend, we captured extra wide shots—such as that full-body frame setting the character where the sea meets the sky, producing an extraordinarily ethereal effect. The costume design actually features numerous details, including the wave motifs along the hem, the lace lining around the collar, and paired ornaments, all requiring meticulous tidying to present the best tactile quality even in thumbnails. Shooting in summer, the heat and sticky sea breeze made touching up makeup quite troublesome; adjusting the hem and props countless times back and forth, even the photographer remarked on how demanding it was to nail down this set.

Nonetheless, seeing the final outcome capture that ethereal, serene aura true to Blue Reimu cosplay, with the character blending harmoniously into the ocean's blue-and-white palette, made every ounce of effort worthwhile. Carrying out a Seaside location shoot by the coast was also great training for me—learning to cooperate with natural wind and ensuring high hit-rates under intense, blinding backlight were invaluable lessons. Overall, it was a challenging yet genuinely delightful Cosplay photoshoot experience.
