For this session, we chose an outdoor waterpark to try out a summer swimsuit spin-off look for Rem and Ram from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. To match the summer vibe, we selected short-sleeved sailor tops made of semi-sheer fabric over striped bikinis. This material delivers a delightfully translucent texture under refracted sunlight, though it heavily tested our lighting angles during the shoot. To preserve the characters' iconic traits, we retained the signature yellow neckties and matching floral wrist accessories, trimmed the wigs into clean, layered bobs, and chose pink and blue contact lenses to faithfully recreate their respective eye colors.
When capturing the first shot seated by the poolside, the ambient temperature was scorching. Wearing white over-the-knee socks and long Stockings cosplay pieces while sitting on sun-baked blue tiles meant that even the slightest sweat caused the fabric to cling tightly and create unwanted creases. To keep the leg lines smooth on camera, we continuously fine-tuned our seated posture along the pool's edge, avoiding excessive compression on leg muscles while guiding visual focus toward the color clash between the stockings and the swim rings. In the final framing of the two of us sitting with legs gently crossed, the midday sun sat directly overhead, fully illuminating the sheer texture of the tops and letting the extended leg lines flow naturally.
The second setup in the water proved even more challenging. Buoyancy and water resistance made it difficult to keep the body completely steady, and splashes easily threatened the wigs and makeup. We had to slow down every movement; raising a left hand to shield against the sun actually doubled as a way to steady our balance. The white swim ring and pink-and-blue pool float not only served as lovely color accents, but also functioned as tangible support props. To keep our makeup clean and luminous, we constantly blotted away oil with tissues between takes, resetting our bangs and hairpins nearly every ten minutes.
Every time we take on a spin-off style cosplay like this, thorough advance communication with the photographer regarding design selection and styling is crucial. We specifically adjusted the blend of our eyeshadow to use brighter tones that complemented the pool environment, while applying blush to evoke a soft, sun-kissed summer aesthetic. The shoot stretched from morning until dusk, during which the lighting transitioned from harsh overhead glare to gentle side-backlight, subtly shifting the refraction through the sheer garments. Although the process was demanding, seeing the final photos capture that vivid contrast between the rippling blue water and the twins' hair colors made all the preparation and repeated angle checks worthwhile. Stepping away from the original combat maid outfits while keeping the characters' core identity elements introduced a uniquely breezy, lazy summer charm.
