Taking advantage of Rapunzel's birthday, I organized this set of Tangled cosplay photos shot last year to share a few first. The shoot was quite demanding, especially the night scenes on the water; to recreate the scene from the movie where the King and Queen release the floating lanterns, we brought a lot of props. Rapunzel's entire outfit is rich in detail—the purplish-pink velvet dress, puff sleeves on the shoulders, drawstring on the chest, and the long braided hair adorned with little flowers were all coordinated piece by piece by myself. A lot of thought also went into the makeup styling, especially the curvature of the eye makeup and eyebrows, aiming to capture the lively expression of the original character after testing several versions.
For the shooting location, we found a waterside spot near a church, which perfectly captured the depth of the water's reflection. The lighting contrast in Night photography is challenging to manage, so we prepared actual glowing lanterns. Balancing the water reflections with the ambient light truly tested the photographer's skill. Rowing the boat was quite nerve-wracking for fear of capsizing—I had to wedge my feet firmly against the bottom of the boat while holding props, but fortunately, my partner's Eugene cosplay worked with great synergy. The Eugene played by Luchuan was remarkably faithful, capturing that roguish yet gentle demeanor spot-on. The interactive moments on the boat, such as watching the lanterns together and close-ups leaning in close, took time to harmonize our movements and expressions, ultimately creating a wonderful atmosphere. Post-processing also took considerable effort—because the cool tones of the night shoot contrasted sharply with the warm glow of the lanterns, we tested multiple color-grading versions to achieve a dreamy feel. For the indoor set, we specifically found a vintage wooden cabin, hung purple bunting flags featuring the yellow sun emblem, and paired them with warm yellow light to look like a room straight out of a fairy tale. Shooting from a low angle effectively highlighted the character's charm. I personally love this timeless, vintage texture; being able to recreate my favorite childhood princess Rapunzel made all the effort worthwhile. There are still many photos left to edit; I initially planned to finish the layout and post earlier, but dragged it out until now to celebrate the birthday milestone. I will share the full version once everything is retouched.
