This shoot features Youmu Konpaku cosplay from Touhou Project, with authentic character accuracy as the primary goal. Speaking of Youmu, one can never bypass Lady Yuyuko, so driven by this obsession, everything is for Lady Yuyuko.
Outfit structure-wise, I selected a mint green and white Japanese style cosplay inner crossover collar top. The outer mint green jacket possesses a lightweight texture with wonderful fabric drape. For headwear, a large black bow ribbon was chosen, closely corresponding to the character design's hair accessory. The lower half features a waist sash adorned with giant cloud patterns, blue peonies, and two white skulls, paired with ribcage and skeleton designs; this decorative style blending life and death is truly eye-catching, making me decide at first glance to focus on shooting this portion well.
For the wig, it's silver-white short hair with neatly trimmed bangs. To get closer to the character's aura, gray-blue contact lenses were used in makeup, giving much more of a character feel compared to daily eye colors, while lip color was chosen in a natural soft pink tone.
Prop-wise, it naturally features her iconic pair of samurai swords. This shoot mainly utilized one of them, where controlling the center of gravity while holding it was key for a Katana girl look.
Filming coincided with cherry blossom season, choosing night-time cherry blossom trees as the backdrop. The photographer demonstrated solid lighting technique, using outdoor strobes to effectively darken the surroundings so flower branches and nightfall served as ambient backdrops highlighting the main subject in this Night photography session. Night shoots place high demands on light metering, but the finished texture turned out fantastic. Combining night cherry blossoms with a character carrying a half-phantom setting like Youmu felt visually harmonious.
Regarding posture design, rather than forcing exaggerated combat stances, a relatively reserved sword-holding posture was chosen with the weapon unsheathed, aiming to emphasize the character's cool yet resolute disposition rather than raw combat tension.
Because costume details were exceptionally rich—especially skeleton skull and flower decorations on the lower half—post-processing focused mainly on color balancing to ensure highly saturated ornaments didn't look jarring. The overall tone leans quiet and mysterious rather than a bright, high-key landscape style.
This shooting experience went smoothly with great synergy between photographer and model. If I gain deeper understanding of Youmu in the future, I might attempt dynamic sword-slashing shots or add flowing poses. For now, sharing this finished photo set under night cherry blossoms, hoping everyone feels Youmu's unique charm.
