This photo was taken by my close friend Xiaoyan. We found a booth against the wall in a restaurant with decent lighting, and caught this exact moment where I'm taking a big bite of bread. I personally love this pose and composition, as it perfectly reveals Chiyo's endearing, straightforward, and adorable nature in daily life.
Let's first talk about the approach to restoring the character look. Chiyo's most prominent features as an orange-haired girl are her long orange-red hair and red ribbons with white polka dots. The wig prepared this time has a bright color and moderate volume, trimmed with her signature blunt bangs and slightly voluminous side curves. Adding the hair ribbons immediately captured her distinctive look. For makeup, I used slightly purplish contact lenses to add depth to the eyes, creating a cool-warm contrast with the orange-red hair. The eye makeup emphasized subtle blending at the outer corners, making the eyes look lively yet focused in a way that is unique to her.
For clothing, I selected her classic school uniform: a white short-sleeved top paired with a yellow vest, complemented by a dark bow tie at the collar. The bright, cheerful color combination perfectly fits the energetic girl vibe. There was actually a funny moment while taking this picture of ACG gourmet food. Since the bread held a thick patty and was quite large, holding it in both hands for a bite required controlling my expression to avoid looking overly exaggerated while ensuring my hair and ribbon bows didn't get smeared by food. Fortunately, the captured snapshot looks completely natural—as if I were truly Chiyo herself, single-mindedly focused on some small everyday matter.
Speaking of the character herself, Chiyo in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is someone who takes her feelings very seriously and always quietly watches over Nozaki-kun. Her daily inner monologues and the hilarious moments caused by Nozaki-kun's dense personality feel incredibly relatable. When portraying her, I tried to step away from overly exaggerated anime-style performances and put her casual cosplay feel first. For instance, the eating action fits her approachable, unpretentious nature perfectly.
The shoot took place in an actual restaurant, which made it easier to capture living, natural expressions compared to studio photography. The vertical-striped wall behind me and the warm lighting added a cozy life-filter to the photo without heavy digital editing, keeping the main character's colors vivid in the frame. When doing cosplay, I personally value whether people familiar with the character can instantly recognize them. While Chiyo is easy to recognize through her iconic hair and ribbon accessories, it doesn't mean a simpler look can be rushed; rather, the better the details are executed, the more impressive the final photos turn out.
For instance, with wig styling, the bangs must be kept light and thin to appear breezy, while the hair ribbons shouldn't sit too high—placing them slightly lower fits the character design better. Although this photo is just an upper-body close-up, the expression, interaction with food, and overall tone combine to make a highly recognizable Chiyo Sakura cosplay. The shooting experience was wonderful, and my friend Xiaoyan gave me many practical tips on composition and quick snaps. As a casual cosplay log for an enthusiast, being able to capture a photo so natural and filled with the character's soul is the greatest reward of all.
