[2B cosplay] NieR:Automata — Quiet Moments Beneath the Cold Blade

When portraying 2B from NieR:Automata, the visual core at first glance lies in that cold yet fiercely aggressive aura. To capture this feeling, intentional arrangements were made in both styling and lighting for this shoot.

The black lace fabric of the costume looks lightweight, but when worn and in motion, the layered material creates a strong sense of dimension. The texture of the white hair forms an extreme visual contrast with the black dress, and combined with the blindfold concealing the eyes, the character's unique sense of detachment immediately emerges. The proportions of the blade prop are accurately reproduced; although not made of metal, gripping it and executing sword-swinging poses still imparts a strong sense of power to the shots. The use of a low-angle perspective was key to the final results—tilting the camera upward, paired with the blade held across the frame, easily maximizes visual tension and intimidation.

When portraying a character that conveys almost no emotion through facial expressions, the focal point of the gaze and the restraint of body language become crucial. 2B as a character is not flamboyant; all emotions are typically implicit in her silent posture and crisp, decisive movements. During the shoot, I deliberately slowed down my movements to feel the slight sway of the lace in the air, ensuring every still frame possessed a tense, prelude-to-battle atmosphere. The fine sheen atop the white wig appeared exceptionally serene and cool against the backdrop of the cold-toned environment.

To complement this cool and stern atmosphere, the on-site lighting utilized a blue-white, high-contrast setup to separate the subject from the background as much as possible, focusing visual attention on the white hair strands and the glint of the blade. The high-angle shot was intended to showcase a slightly more dynamic combat stance, but in terms of composition and the character's overall silhouette, the low-angle shot is indeed more fitting. Putting on this outfit, one can't help but be influenced by its dark gothic design, compelling you to rein in unnecessary facial expressions and maintain an intimidating, commanding composure.

In fact, shooting such an aloof and cold character truly tests one's grasp of instantaneous presence. If the gaze softens even slightly, the entire aura collapses into simply wearing black clothes and a wig, losing the grim, desolate edge belonging to the world of NieR:Automata. Therefore, I remained in a focused, zen-like state almost the entire time, mainly relying on the photographer's guidance and camera language to convey the narrative.

For friends who want to try a similar style of cosplay, my advice is to pay close attention to how the wig matches your face shape. 2B's short white hair and thick bangs cover a significant part of the facial contour; if the makeup does not emphasize the visible eye, it can easily look lifeless. Securing the blindfold and headpiece also requires care to ensure they do not shift during wide movements. Furthermore, the pose of holding the blade in front and pushing forward, while visually imposing, heavily tests arm strength and balance—one must strike a balance between looking sharp and staying steady.

This photoshoot allowed me once again to experience the tension of this character in still imagery—without excessive motion, simply standing there with weapon ready, the detachment and decisiveness radiating from within are conveyed effortlessly. Rather than just a reproduction, it felt like striving to run parallel with the character to create a cold, razor-sharp aesthetic impression.
